The Last Days of Tian Di series by Catherine Egan (#1-#3)

Overview: I was born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. I am told I was a screamy baby. Except for one year in Oxford, England, I lived in the same house with my parents and my two brothers and our cats until I grew up and moved out. I had a nice childhood, as these things go. I loved to read, of course; some of my favourite authors were Lloyd Alexander, Arthur Ransome, Diana Wynne Jones, Susan Cooper, Louise Fitzhugh, and Madeleine L’Engle.
I wrote a book, and the story got so big that it turned into three books. Coteau Books decided to publish them! That Guy finished his PhD and got a Real Job, so in 2012 we moved to New Haven, CT, with our two little guys. For pictures of some of my travels with That Guy (who is also The Photographer) in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Shade & Sorceress (The Last Days of Tian Di #1)
Eliza knows for certain what she isn't: the powerful sorceress the learned Mancers think her to be. Or is she? Eliza is stunned to learn her father has been keeping important secrets. Her mother's death wasn't from pneumonia, but the death of all great Shang Sorceresses: killed in battle against evil forces. Even so, Eliza's lessons with the Mancers at their citadel show them what she has always known--she can't do any magic. Imprisoned in the Arctic by Eliza's mother's final brave act, the evil Xia Sorceress uses her minions to capture Eliza's father. Escaping the citadel with her best friend Nell and new friend Charlie, Eliza sets off to rescue him. They seek help from the Triumvirate, an uneasy alliance of ultimate power--the Oracle, the King of the Faeries and Swarn, the witch who delivered Eliza as a baby. They try to stop her, but she is determined. She knows she's connected to the Xia Sorceress somehow. What awaits Eliza in the Arctic prison is more horrible than she could have imagined. Abandoned by the Mancers and the Triumvirate, she must rely on her friends and her own wits and common sense to succeed in her quest.
The Unmaking (The Last Days of Tian Di #2)
Eliza, now fourteen, has been studying magic and gaining a reputation for her power. She has much yet to learn - although she understands things like the ancient magic by which things are made and unmade, she cannot yet effect it herself. She is strong-headed and independent as ever, chafng at the boundaries the Mancers have set for her. Ravens continue to gather around Eliza and the Citadel, and nobody is sure if they are Eliza’s guides or a tricksent by the evil Xia sorceress Nia.
The Mancers create magic daily to keep Nia in her prison, but she escapes, turning them all to stone except Eliza’s grandfather, Kyreth, the head Mancer. Why on earth would she do that? Nia also summons Ancient Magic to create a horrid Kwellrahg, with which to threaten Eliza’s mother.
Eliza, her friends Nell and Charlie, the witch Swarn and the Faerie Lord Jalo must somehow stop Nia from wreaking further destruction.The key to victory is Eliza’s mastery of the Ancient Magic herself. Can she make it work in time? Will they learn the true story of Eliza and Nia’s common heritage?
