Fish Stocks Limited by Michael Summers (Infinity Fish Trilogy #1)
Requirements: .ePUB, .MOBI, .PDF READER | 1.50 MB
Overview: Fish Stocks Limited is Moby Dick for the Sponge Bob Square Pants generation. The style ranges from the absurdly Melvillian (‘Call me Fishmael’) to the Pratchettesque (we meet a character called Stan who sells ‘post-insurance’ to people who have just been robbed). There is an almost obsessive preoccupation with the piscine from the start, which sees a young Piscador called Ambrosius Codwich falling from his lofty hooktree home towards the dreaded mist sea below, the domain of fish and ghosts. Ambrosius’ life flashes in front of him as he falls. He realises just what he has missed out on – in particular the only girl he ever loved, Sunbeam Lightning, who has married the wrong man. He also has to face up to being fishless for his whole life, a great shame amongst the Piscadors.
But Fate has plans for Ambrosius; before he hits the ground he is caught by a dangling fishhook, ripping off his trousers but slowing him enough to save his life. He hits the ground. Without sparing a minute the young fisher turns to scale the nearest hooktree, but looking over his shoulder he sees something silvery, sinusoidal and serene – he sees an Infinity Fish in its natural environment. Looking into those endless eyes Ambrosius is confronted with the absolute and he is hooked. This begins an epic quest to find the Infinity Fish of Fate.
Fish Stocks Limited can be read as both a light-hearted, humorous fantasy and a very relevant comment on our own use of finite resources. The story is particularly relevant in the current economic downturn, and would appeal to young adults and adults alike.
