I've got a Kindle and sometimes I see the AZW in addition o the MOBI files.

When/why would I want to use the AZW instead of the MOBI files?
(Does x-ray work if I use the AZW?)

It seems like I've had issues e-mailing the AZW files before (can I do that?).

FYI, I usually e-mail my files to my Kindle (via Amazon) so that when I read it on the Kindle or via the App on my iPad they're synced to the main page.

Thank you.

From the point of view of someone who doesn't own a Kindle, I prefer AZW.

With MOBI, I must do an ePUB conversion in order to read such books on the iPad using iBooks or Marvin. I don't want to have to use yet another reading app for MOBIs alone. With AZW, one can extract the ePUB using the Kindle Unpack plugin for Calibre; ergo, no conversion necessary.

I hope someone comes along who owns a Kindle and can answer your Kindle-related questions.

Using the Amazon email to Kindle you can send AZW and Mobi files to a kindle, you theoretically can't send epub using the kindle mail to function. I'm fairly sure if you buy anything from Amazon it will be in AZW format

Unfortunately, no. Some titles continue to be sold in the MOBI format.

AZW is Amazon's proprietary encoding of the books sold by them. MOBI was originally a cross platform compression software which Amazon acquired. EPub is open source software, and AMAZON does not use it, for obvious reasons. AZW is Amazon sole format specifically developed for the Kindle ebook tablets, like paper white. It's newest format, with proprietary compression algorithms and encryption. It's DRM...It contains particular keys that associate the identity of the purchaser, to the authorized device . Pulling a file from the a kindle directory of your ebook reader , without decryption would render the object unreadable. Amazon is in the business of taking your $$$ and then dictating what, you as the purchaser can or can not do. You can not lend your book to a friend, or sell it...

Whenever I e-mail an AZW file to my Kindle, Amazon kicks it back...

Yeah, I just tried this again. I mailed an AZW file (from Mobilism) to my Kindle and it kicked it back.

Is anyone emailing AZW file successfully to their Kindle? or am I just trying the few files that have problems?

Maybe I could drag it and it would have more features? But then the page I'm on doesn't get synced to my other Kindle devices/apps...

Every AZW file I send to my Kindle gets rejected. I have to convert to Mobi for it to be accepted.

If you import an azw file into Calibre with the DeDRM plugin installed (currently 6.2.1) then it is converted from an azw to a non-DRMed azw3, which can then be emailed to your Kindle device and there is no Calibre conversion. I don't use a Kindle so I can't answer your question on whether it would still get synced across devices, but since it is still an azw file, I would assume it could be.

I've found AZW3 to be a *lot* more reliable in transferring from Calibre to my Voyage. For whatever reason, lots of Mobi format ebooks refuse to index. For me, anyway.

Kindle/Amazon will not allow you to allow you to send an AZW3 file to your kindle it does not recognise the format. (Kindle 5th gen OS 5.1.1)

Hmm...that's odd, as really they are pretty much the same format, just with DRM stripped out. I wonder if simply renaming the extension from azw3 to azw (or mobi?) would work or if it would error out?

Will it still accept emailing of mobi or prc files? If so, people using the emailing function may need to start converting to one of those formats instead.

If it doesn't accept those other formats either, that would seem to imply Amazon is forcing people with Kindles ONLY to purchase books from them in order to use their readers. Other companies who have tried that in the past have seen major reversals in the sales of their products but Amazon has a large enough market share that it is possible they might prevail.

FWIW, if you need info on different Amazon formats, here's a link to a brief explanation.
