I think you have to email it to your Amazon account in order to get it to dl to your Kindle app.
If you go to Amazon and mouseover "Your Account" you'll see a link to "Manage Your Content and Devices" - if you click on that and then on your Ipad, you will see an email link like "Fred83 @ kindle.com" which should allow you to send the file to your ipad and the Kindle app.
I know that in the past when I've tried sending azw files from Dropbox to my Kindle app that the app refuses to acknowledge the files so I suspect that is your only option.

Hmm...can they be dragged and dropped via Itunes when your ipad is plugged into your computer? I can't recall now if the Kindle app shows up as an option for transferring files that way.

If the AZW4 file is purchased from your account then it should be in the "cloud" and you can just download it from app to app.
