I kind of like to read books the way they were written, I'm weird that way ;-)
But so many people insist on including li'l 'gifts' within the text that I wonder.... am I wrong...?
Examples from the latest couple of books I downloaded, see for yourself:
“There’s plenty of time for that,” Mrs. Ellsworth said 82 Victoria Thompson cheerfully.

and a few lines later:
“I can’t under-Murder in Little Italy 83 stand why...”

oh, and my favourite:
He plays tennis every page 12 Generated by ABC Amber LIT Converter,http://http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html morning from 7:30 to 8:30.

Let me know if you think I'm wrong... but either way, may I say 'no more gifts' please?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I see your point, merry dear!
I do apologize if you found that in my releases. I haven't got enough chance to check all of the quality.
Sometimes I just feel too happy to share first, check later, then edit. Or sometimes I forget which one I have checked for the quality. You're always welcome to share the edited part though, as well as the rest of other members if they found them. It's called 'caring'.
You care what I shared. Isn't that the beauty of joining this site ?
wow, now i start talking in rhymes after those children verses thingy,
Accept my apology ?

i can't reup dead links anymore

Hehe, I trust the quality of releases in my own site to be good so I don't go about checking them.... don't take it personally ;-)

I was just venting my frustration, I download books from other sites to complete collections and find files with more hidden 'gems' than I bargained for.

But it seems that nobody cares, I just read a reply in a request saying 'you can find that collection here' with a link to the books I had just discarded for the reasons mentioned above. And I have to bite my tongue and say nothing!

Pity that not many believe this is important :?

I have to agree with you Merry. It kind of makes me wonder every now and then if it was meant to be there, as i think sometimes it would be hard to tell. I think i have started to develop a sort of immunization to it though, and now sort of barely see it.LOL

The ABC thing is automatically added by the conversion software. I get it with some of my jar ebooks as well -.-

Yeah, I do agree with you on that, merry, I get that in some of my ebooks from here, but I actually edit them myself on Sigil. I usually check my ebooks before I put them in my Aluratek Libre. Maybe I should start sharing the ones I edit myself. I just don't know where to upload them that's free.... hmmm...

Yea, agree with you Merry, although andree’s comments concerning enthusiasm to share are very realistic, further it takes time and practice and early efforts (although you think they are just wonderful at the time), can be viewed differently without the rose coloured glass’s a few months latter on.

On the down side, some of these copies complete with page numbers, page titles, ABC banners to register etc… poorly edited scans $<%~ become saturated on various lists and as the title is already posted on a site, good versions are either not listed, not accredited (be it wrz or acknowledgment) or completely overlooked.

Lol. Most of the times, this little 'gift' made me try to assassinate my kindle. (Poor Kindlerella, she is so sad when I have these urges. She who is so kind. D: )

^^" Thankfully, there are ways to get around it. Or you can just download many, many, many different versions then correct. *sighs* I just usually go back to the pdf file, crop it with briss then convert it with amazon's services.

So much troubles when it's an entire series of ebooks .___.;;;

Either way, I agree.

Please, spare kindlerella. She likes to be snuggled and petted and not having me tie her up to a computer for hours.

Hiccup: [narrating] My name's Hiccup. Great name, I know. But it's not the worst. Parents believe that a hideous name will frighten off gnomes and trolls. Like our charming Viking demeanor wouldn't do that.
Viking: [screams in Hiccup's face] RAAAAHHHR!
[then, casually]
Viking: Morning!

Couldn't agree more, Merry!

ESPECIALLY that 'ABC' one! I don't see HOW that is supposed to make anyone WANT their software! I have seen each of those other versions too.

Some others I have seen: "Back to the Table of Contents" at the bottom of EVERY page. PDFs with the page number in the middle of the current page.

One way I fix some of these is to (from an open PDF file) "save to text file," Then I use a free text editor (Editpad Lite - Sooo much more versatile than editpad) and copy the "ABC" crap into the seach panel's 'search for' box. In the 'replace with' box, I just hit the delete key once. Next is the 'replace all' button and then I save the file again. And then, of course, the newly saved text file needs to be re-converted to the preferred format. A bit tedious at times, but it does make for a better, more easily readable book.

I've gotten pretty good at taking most of that kind of garbage out with Calibre.

I'm still trying to learn things like this! I'm dead certain that Calibre is MUCH more versatile than the way I use it!

I am by no means an expert. But here are some tips-

Before converting check the metadata and add the cover if needed.

when converting PDF to another format, I usually click on the Heuristic Processing option, click enable, UNclick italicize common words (and sometimes I unclick delete spaces between paragraphs). Then I go down to Search & Replace, click on the magic wand square on the right, and you can get a look at the coding. I usually ignore all the stuff at the beginning. Go down into the body of the document and look for headers and other symbols. For example some documents have an odd character like a black mark ‟ instead of an apostrophe or quotation marks. So copy it and paste it into the search box and click ok. Then in the Replace box, put the correct character ' or ". If there are more things to remove or replace, click on the next wand and select another section of text such as [Marie Harte ] - not the brackets, I put them in to illustrate that it is important to include the space if it is there. The actual coding looks like this < i >< b >Marie Harte < /b >< /i > (spaces added by me) but its not necessary to put in the tags etc as it will be ignored. Paste the header into the search box. Leave the replace box blank.

When you find the amberlit garbage, also pay attention to the tags... the data to put in the box usually looks like this [Generated by ABC Amber LIT Conv ] and [erter, http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html] (brackets added by me)--the stuff in the tags will disappear once you take the text out.

If there is a header that looks like this 2 author's name you can fix that too....make sure to add the exact number of spaces. To get the number out of all the headers (instead of just page 2) change the 2 to \d+ and make sure you don't change the number of spaces. This will also work for headers that say something like Page 13 change it to Page \d+

If you don't like how your PDF turns out you can try converting from PDF to ZIP (which is html) and the ZIP to mobi, or try PDF to TXT then TXT to MOBI, or epub if that's what you want.

Oh another thing....the search and replace only has 3 boxes for text... when there are more than 3 things that need correction what I do is for the 4th item, click convert mobi to mobi (if that's what I converted to) then search and replace, then fill in whatever text you need.....you won't loose the 1st three that you already did.

I hope that is clear and gets you going in the right direction!

Ah, right now, that's about as clear as mud. Image

But I'll try it with a test case and I'm sure it will get clearer as I go! I have PDFtoEPUB, Sigil, and Calibre, Now, if I was only proficient at USING them ...

But ... I'm learning more and more about them every day. Thanx for the tips!

I think most of these "little presents" arrive via pdf conversion. For this reason, if the original was a PDF, many would prefer that to the converted version inclusive of page numbers, titles and additional advertising.

Mobipocket Creator is free, it is said to be effective in removing the page numbers, titles and abc headers and footers. It takes the pdf and outputs a prc or html, they can then be processed via calibre, leaving the calibre settings as standard and converting to rtf or txt for further editing if necessary (rtf preferable when possible as it does not remove the italic, but sometimes .txt is the only option as word balks at {} for some reason). On the down side, some of the lines are shortened within the mobipocket conversion and you are faced with addition time spent removing the unwanted line spaces. However, the finished product is clean and well appreciated.

Adobe of course is another option and will remove page numbers and titles although often leaves the abc headers. On the down side adobe will balk at a number of files for various reasons that mobipocket seems proficient with.

Abc also leaves html in the background that can make the insertion of a toc quite frustrating.

In short there is no easy way to remove the irritants, it is time consuming weather you tackle it via Calibre, Adobe, Mobipocket or manually remove etc... After processing a few, you certainly gain a great deal more respect for those that do put the time, effort and love into removing these little presents.

But please, if you feel that you must share these little presents, could you also include the original. Or better yet, when listing state that page numbers etc... are inclusive.

Cheers

I've never quite mastered the art of RegEx. Maybe the next time I come across something like that... I'll PM you to translate. ;)
