Hi everyone, does anyone know how a cover gets rotated 180 on epub conversions or how to put it right? I don't mean the front cover, an extra added a couple of pages in? I've been looking all round Calibre but can't find any edit for this, and the calibre site is not clear!

Well, if you have an Epub copy of the file, you can open it in Sigil and then go to the 'Images' folder, right-click and choose 'remove' to delete it, but unless you already have another copy of the pic, you won't be able to replace it.

Okay Bohica60, got 'Sigil', where's the 'Sigil for dummies' guide? It's not very straight forward!

Well, for me, it has been a 'Learn as you go" kind of thing, but clicking on "Help" and then "User Manual" brings you to this page,

http://web.sigil.googlecode.com/git/contents.html

Mostly, I just muddle on through on my own, but sometimes I send merry60 a question or two.

womble, I've been using Sigil for a little bit now.
It's the only thing I've got that opens Epub's other than Calibre's reader function.
I probably will get the Firefox add-on that Bohica was so kind as to inform us about, but I just really haven't needed to bother yet.

My take on Sigil is that-

It's free and updated periodically
It's a powerful editor for Epub that you could probably read with if you wanted to
It's NOT a program to convert formats with. (Yes I know it probably converts to HTML or whatever)
It will allow me to fix covers, TOC, and other things if I take the time to learn how.
It will NOT open some Epubs, that Calibre will, and errors out with a message - I have no clue why.

Nevertheless, I have it associated with Epubs on my computer and wouldn't be without it.
It goes without saying that Bohica and Merry will probably be more able to advise you on its use than I can... :D

I was trying to play with it yesterday and couldn't even get book loaded! Maybe I'll spend today reading more instructions & playing around with it. I like Bohica60's new sig

For some reason, there are some Epubs that Sigil just will not open. I don't know why. There are two main ways to open a file in it though. Either, open Sigil and do the 'file', 'new', 'open' bit, or, go to the file, right-click on it and select 'Open file with' and then select Sigil. Either way should open it if Sigil WILL open it.

Thanx, one of my favorite pics!

This is usually solved by converting with Calibre first, ePUB to ePUB.

I may have to try that then. I have a retail Epub that Sigil will open, but there is nothing where you usually find the text in the book browser window.

But there have been a few that simply did not open at all in Sigil. Yet, I could open them in EPUBReader or Calibre's internal reader just fine.

ESPECIALLY that 'ABC' one! I don't see HOW that is supposed to make anyone WANT their software! I have seen each of those other versions too.

Some others I have seen: "Back to the Table of Contents" at the bottom of EVERY page. PDFs with the page number in the middle of the current page.

One way I fix some of these is to (from an open PDF file) "save to text file," Then I use a free text editor (Editpad Lite - Sooo much more versatile than editpad) and copy the "ABC" crap into the seach panel's 'search for' box. In the 'replace with' box, I just hit the delete key once. Next is the 'replace all' button and then I save the file again. And then, of course, the newly saved text file needs to be re-converted to the preferred format. A bit tedious at times, but it does make for a better, more easily readable book.

Hi Bohica60, What else does Editpad Lite do? I've been managed to edit a couple of books in their txt format and convert back to prefered format (bye bye 'ABC'), but is there a way of ensuring the book doesn't lose its page set up? I've noticed on some books that there are page breaks and chapters starting in odd places, is there a 'fix'?

OK, first of all, I messed up on that part of my initial post. It SHOULD have read:

(Editpad Lite - Sooo much more versatile than notepad or wordpad)

Basically, Editpad Lite (the free version of Editpad) is a much more ... robust version of Notepad. Notepad has file size restrictions (I haven't found it yet if Editpad Lite does), and doesn't have nearly as many editing options as Editpad Lite. For instance, the 'Search and Replace' function in Editpad Lite is great.

I'm not really sure about the 'not losing its page set up' part. Usually, I am trying to lose the page setup, DUE to the 'page breaks and chapters starting in odd places' !!!

I have seen files that were converted to txt, yet still had those hard page breaks inserted where they should not be. I have been looking for a way to 'kill' those for some time now. For some reason, there does NOT seem to be a 'Delete page break' or 'Delete all page breaks' button to be found on any text editor I've run across yet.

This editor is usually at the top of most "top ten" lists, with just ultraedit coming ahead. It is free

Notepad++: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

(My apologizes for the thread hijack, but it did seem relevant to the previous posts)
