Thanks

There are a few ways this can be done. The first and probably easiest way is to copy the file onto a SD card and put the card into your device. The second way is to connect your device to the computer using a USB cable, changing the device settings to allow the computer to access your device as a storage device, then copy the file into your device. The third way is to pair your device and your computer via bluetooth and send the file to your device via bluetooth. You can also send an email to yourself with the file attached and download the attachment.

I was referring to what program or app on a tablet reads an ePub file? I.e. Kobo, etc. Aren't these not DRM free?

If they are epub files then you should take a look at Adilko Reader. Awesome interface, user friendly.

I like FBReader for my (Android) phone. There's a plug-in to use TTS (text to speech) which is great!

Moon Reader is also very good and customizable. B&N's Nook app can also be used to read side-loaded epubs and offers a pretty good interface.

That's how I do it.

Just plug the phone into the computer via USB. Drag the ebook file into the Kindle folder (I use Amazon Kindle's program) and voila.

Dropbox is great for transferring files to any mobile device, and with Aldiko reader just double click on your epub in Dropbox and it will download then open. Very simple, very easy, entirely free.

Does this work for MOBI as well?

I don't use mobi, but Dropbox works for any kind of file. Automated opening I'm not sure about. You may have to download it to your device (it goes in the Dropbox folder) then move it to your Kindle reader documents directory before the Kindle app will recognize it.

Side loading through USB or SD card is ususally the fastest. If you have a database of clean epubs though(Like, say a Google storage account, or dropbox) you can browse to it in your webbrowser, click the file, download the file chose to open it with your favorite ereader program(Aldiko being mine) and it will automatically load it into your folder system for the reader and add it to your library.

For things like the iPad that encourage you to use the itunes program(which i refuse to install on anything other than my desktop) this is a great way to sidestep that.
