Nobody has mentioned µBook yet. IMHO, the best reader by far for the PPC. There's a thread for version 0.9 in the software section, and I posted version 0.8 (the last non-nagging shareware version) in that same thread. Works great on WM5, using Forcehires it even looks great on a VGA screen. The program can read HTML, TXT, RTF, PDB and PRC (not secure) ebook files. It can read directly from inside ZIP files, and supports BMP, GIF, PNG and JPG images.

Not my release! - but the software has been posted:

viewtopic.php?f=44&t=361&start=30

The working version is post number 38 in that thread, the latest version of the reader with a working crack. The ones in the initial post work but all flash nag screens every five pages.

Version 0.9 is also VGA aware, no need to use Forcehires.

The default skin looks ghastly, but the Classic skin and some smart choices in the settings makes it the best looking one for reading, IMO. Setting the font to Georgia, for instance (one has to copy georgia*.ttf from a normal Windows computer, from C:\windows\fonts, to the \windows\fonts directory on the PPC first) gives a great, readable serif font.

No, I'm not paid by anyone at µBook HQ, I just really like the reader and want to share the info. ;)

Oh - and for anyone who feels like I do, that Microsoft Reader is a nasty, bug-ridden bloated hog of a program, there is a way to get rid of having to use it almost entirely - ConvertLIT.

http://www.convertlit.com

ConvertLIT (or, cough, CLIT as it is also known) can take any unencrypted LIT file (and encrypted ones too I think, though I don't know what you need to do that, haven't tried) and spit out HTML instead, making it readable on your favorite reader instead of Microsofts nasty behemoth of a reader. CLIT is a command line program, so for ease of use there is a third-party GUI for it:

To each his own, but I just detest the lack of configurability and features in MS Reader, and to say nothing about how sloow it can be. Sometimes you do a page down and have to wait, and you can't configure the fonts at all (you have to just live with the choice whoever built the e-book made) and of course it's a closed format (though fortunately hacked and decodable now...)

And what are you going to do if (when?) you switch to a non-Microsoft handheld or book reader? You'll be stuck with a huge pile of LIT files that you can't do a darn thing with... except of course convert them with CLIT. ;)

As for speed, ConvertLIT can convert a LIT to HTML in a couple of seconds. :-D

What is the difference between .cbz & .cbr' files.

Or, how to read .cbr with PocketCBZ?

CBR are RAR files
CBZ are ZIP files

just the file extension has be changed.

if you want to use pocket CBZ to read CBR files you need to first open in winrar, uncompress the files then zip them and change the extension to CBZ.

Pretty sure pcketCBZ has an app that will make CBZ files but it reduces the image resolution

is it just me or does it seem like the mobipocket site has been down for quite a while now:

Mobipocket.com has been shut down for maintenance, please come back later.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Mobipocket Team

i recently reset all of my stuff and don't have anything to install mobipocket with anymore...

from wikipedia today:

The company has been making headlines for going offline on 15 August 2007 until today, allegedly 'for maintenance' purposes, without informing either its customers or its content partners about the cause of the problem, or the expected duration of the failure.[3] There is speculation that the system was brought down by sabotage, since Mobipocket refused to stop selling Alms_for_Jihad when Cambridge University Press withdrew hard copies from the market, and the failure occurred within 24 hours of their refusal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobipocket

anybody know where an old copy of this program might be? i might have it but i'm not sure.

ah, once again wikipedia is about as reliable as the amount you pay for it:

NOTICE: A major problem occurred with the Mobipocket DRM server at about 6:30 PM Eastern Time, Wednesday, August 15. Engineers at Mobipocket.com have informed us that they hope to be back online sometime this weekend, August 18 or 19. We have switched, where possible, all Secure Mobipocket files purchased during the downtime to an alternative DRM provider, Content Reserve. We have also taken all titles that could not be switched offline in Mobipocket format until the problem is resolved.

So, at this point in time, any Secure Mobipocket title you see onsale can be downloaded immediately. Titles that cannot be downloaded immediately have been temporarily taken offsale in the Secure Mobipocket format.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and we will post a new message when the problem is resolved.
