Newbie here to both ebooks in general and this forum looking for advice.

I'm wanting to buy the new Ian Rankin book, The Impossible Dead.

Anyone any advice on where to best buy this in a format I can read on both my Ipad and my Android Nova reader?

It seems everywhere I look I can read it on one but not the other and I object to buying a book that I can only read on one reader.

Any advice most welcome!

Thanks

Hi Redlark, I'm a newbie too
It really depends on what reader you are using? Most hand held readers : Nook, Kindle only support one format, Ipad, p.c's & laptops etc can use many?
I use a laptop for downloading & reading with all the formats if I need them, if I can't find a format I like I use 'Calibre' which converts to most formats (although it can have trouble with pdf ) and 'Sigil' which also converts (don't know much about it yet!).
This is a great forum to learn a lot of the users and moderators are very helpful and I've learnt a lot since first visiting here,
Example:
You can ALSO just READ EPUBs that are on your computer with it. Just open Firefox, click on 'EPUBreader' and when it opens, just use the 'file,' 'open' buttons on the main bar. Look for the EPUB you want to read and click on it, and it opens in the reader.

If you don't have Firefox, two of these programs will still let you read EPUBS, Calibre & Sigil. In Sigil, of course, you can use it like a reader (You have to be able to read it to edit it ) In Calibre, just left-click twice on an EPUB in your Calibre library and it will open in Calibre's default reader.

OK, I already had a PM request earlier for these, so maybe posting these will help everybody. First link is the main page, second link is the download page.

Also, here is a GREAT free pic editing tool (making them larger, smaller, deleting portions, etc). I have been using it for 6-7 years now with no problems (No ads, no trial limits, etc.) It called Irfanview.

I hope this helps? :)

Just a note to clarify: That first parapraph in that quote refers to an addon for Firefox called "EPUBReader," which lets you read Epub formatted books either online or on your computer. I don't know if it works with "E-devices" (Ipad, Ipod, Nook, Kindle, etc) or not.

Format wise, I pefer LIT to read, PDF to admire (if it's a really well done one,) and EPUB to convert with. I read on a desktop, and so far I haven't found an EPUB or MOBI reader I really like for that situation. I'll read from a PDF sometimes, depending on whether it's a beauty or it's so hideous I can barely stand it, but I like the way MS Reader handles bookmarks and such better.

If you have Firefox as your browser, check out the EPUBreader addon for that. With it enabled, if you download an unrarred epub, it will open it online and you can read it that way. You can also set it to 'disabled' if you want to just download the EPUB. If it IS enabled, and the EPUB opens online, you can either read it that way, or there is a little diskette icon in the bottom left of the main panel. Just click on that and it will download the file to your computer just like any other download.

Hi redlark,
From my understanding both Ipad and the Pandigital Nova use the epub format, so i would suggest that you buy the book in epub and with the Nova you can buy direct from Barnes and Noble. However, your problem will be that the book is drm'd which is why theoretically you can't read it on the ipad. The way around that is to un-drm your book using simple apps which you can readily find on the web (google epub drm removal). Be sure you have your purchase details to hand because you will need some of the details. Once you've removed the drm you will be able to read the book on any epub reader and if you have a friend who has a kindle it's easy to convert to mobi for her too.
Good luck.

If you purchase through Barnes and Noble, you can utilize their Nook app to read those purchased books on an iPad.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Have now managed to download the epub of the book, de-DRM it and have it both readers. Much appreciated.
