Hi,

I just got my first Kindle (kindle touch). I downloaded some .mobi ebooks, but when I put them into the documents folder of my kindle, they don't show up on the home screen. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

unfortunately, you are rather vague as to how you
put them into the documents folder of my kindle
so it's a bit difficult to be sure what is wrong. i'm working from an old kindle 3 so the process may be a bit different.
Plug the usb cable into your pc,
turn on your kindle, plug the usb cable into the kindle,
you should get the USB Drive mode notice.

now click on windows explorer and under computer you should see Kindle,
click on kindle to open the directory.
the directory should have the following: documents, music, audio.

click on documents and see if the files you think should be there are actually there;
if the books are there confirm that the extension is "mobi".

eject your kindle from your pc.

now check your home page on your kindle and see if the books are there.

you don't say where you got the ebooks that you loaded; if it was from this forum then you can be sure that there are not drm'ed. however, if you got them from somewhere else, then try this. download mobi ebook reader to your pc and try and open the ebooks that you loaded onto the kindle from your pc copy. if they don't open then you have drm'ed copies and they will not open.

let us know how you get on. good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I've followed these steps:

Hook up kindle to PC
Open the kindle from my computer
opened the documents folder
put the .mobi books directly into the kindle/documents folder
Eject kindle from pc.

However it still seems kind of hit and miss for books to show up on my home screen. I downloaded a few books from here that were mobi format. The first time I tried this, a couple of the books showed up. However when I reset my kindle to factory, and tried again, the same books that showed up the first time wouldn't show up again, and the books that didn't show up, still didn't show up.

I've tried this process from a few different computers so far with no luck (all pc's). I've also tried this on 3 kindle touches (gifts I'll be sending out) so far, but have always had the same thing happen.

I've also tried using calibri, and sending the mobi books to my device, but still no success. The files are there on my kindle, and the kindle even made sub directories for the mobi books, but still no luck.

Do you think this is a Kindle Touch thing?

Thanks for all your help.

Can amazon know the books/apps you have in your kindle that were sideloaded?

As far as I know, no for documents/books, but not sure about apps.

But if you can't sideload, you can email them to your personal document account. If you use [email protected] then it's free to download, so long as you have wifi. But it'll be on Amazon server, so Amazon will know.

Does Amazon knows or can tell which apps and books you have in your kindle at any given moment? and if yes if there is an app or way to stop this from happening.

Is there a way or app which will prevent amazon form knowing? Can one create a different directory aside from default to store books and apps that I don't want amazon to know I have?

Do they have a way of telling where you got that book or app? or they only know that you have that app. or book?
