So I have an iPod touch with both iBooks and Kindle apps. I prefer the Kindle app.

I was wondering what the best reader is for reducing eye strain?
I don't need anything fancy, just something basic for lots of reading.

I'm thinking a Kindle with E Ink display.

Anyone have posatives or negatives about this?
Any other eReader options for reducing eye strain?

Thanks
I appreciate any input!

I've got the 'basic' kindle, it's great you can alter the size of the text & rotate it so you've got a wider screen, I've got a little clip-on light to read at night so no back-light problems and the battery lasts longer. I'm definately a kindle fan, The Kobo has reduced in price so it might be worth looking at too.

When you talk about eye strain. Is this day time or night time reading? Since I use an iPad and obviously I can choose if I want to use the Kindle app, I go for iBooks. Books seem to be easier to read, unless your in say full sunlight or something but because you can change the tone of the book color from white to sepia for daytime reading (I go either way for that) and obviously the night time reading feature if I wasn't on Netflix or here at night.

It's all about preference. I bet even reading print books your eyes would strain a bit if it were one of those books you simply just couldn't put down. I'm not familiar with the Kindle and its eInk feature capabilities, so I can't say a whole lot about that. Same goes with Kobo or nook.

When I went looking I was prepared to buy either a Nook, Kindle or a Kobo. I like the Nook Simple Touch because of the location of buttons to turn pages. I also like the lack of a bunch of visible emblems and writing to distract me while reading. All that is on the nook is a U shaped thing at the bottom that is black on black and nook which is like carved into it on the top. The nook on the top is really hard too see depending how the light strikes it. I also liked how it felt in my hands, but in a case that all changes. If you can, I would go to a store and look and feel any device your thinking about getting first.

I've seen the kindle and kobo side by side and the kindle has a sharper display but the kobo was easier to use and a bit lighter.

I didn't buy either one since I already have way too many gadgets, but I'd probably lean towards the Kobo. I think that they were about the same, cost wise.

I can't comment on the nook, they're not available in the UK, when I was looking for a reader for my daughter, there were complaints about the quality of the ebooks they were selling (not an issue for some of us who convert and edit), and the kindle was quite simple to use - very important! I liked it so much my hubby bought me one. I've taken it with me this week and it's been great - a whole library available at a touch :D

I know you are talking about hardware here, but I like reading books in Sigil. Actually, that's a book editing program, but it has a scale bar at the bottom right that you can adjust to make the print larger or smaller. My eyesight isn 't so good, so this works real good for me.

I have a Kobo touch but I would say that it sometimes has a problem keeping up with my normal reading speed of a page per second or 2 seconds. Otherwise I have found it excellent

 OMG Sherlockx and Zackddog agree on something. Is the world ending today and no one told me?!?!

I went and looked a several-Kindle, Nook, Sony's. Unfortunately Best Buy no longer carries the Kobo. (I liked the extra memory option.) From what I was told they have been getting a lot of complaints re it so they're not stocking it anymore.

I got a Kindle Touch. Not sure how well I like it. We'll see. :?

And Zack I too have an assortment of, um, "electronic gadgets".

In NZ our choices are pretty limited

Sony - Kobo- Kindle

Ive got a kindle - find it so much easier on the eyes than my friends Kobo. I was lucky enough to be able to "try before I buy".

I still cant read for a huge amount of time on my Kindle - I do wonder if its because I cant wear my glasses to read on the Kindle as the words are too sharp and hurt my eyes, so I take them off. I still read for about an hour or two before I need to turn it off.

The Sony e-reader is probably a higher quality build (it has a better design too) but it costs a lot more than the mainstream e-readers, Nook and Kindle. Kobo is kinda like that black sheep of the family. There's been a lot of complaints about its build quality but nobody I know owns one so I can't really say much about it personally. The Kindle Touch is great, and I've heard only great things about the Nook Simple Touch. But then again I am kind of biased toward the Kindle Touch since I own one, but I'm totally rooting for Nook too.

If I were you though, I'd go for the Nook Glow. It comes with a built in light that evenly spreads out across the entire screen. Clip on lights can't do that (some parts of the screen are ALWAYS darker than the rest). Not to mention the fact that the "normal" battery life is double that of the Kindle, with the light on it's about the same. It depends on where you live really, if I lived in the US I'd totally buy the Nook due to the availability of B&N stores.

I have a Kindle and love it. As it had the eink it was recommended to me over other ereaders.
I wear glasses and have no problem. You can enlarge the font if needed.
I have the cover with the inbuilt light which I use at night, it's great and I usually read for a few hours at a time and have no eye strain at all
The inbuilt light give me extra at night, as we use low voltage bulbs in the house to save on electricity.

If it wasn't for the iPad then yeah I would definitely go for the Kindle (w/o Special Offers  ) and probably get the light that goes with it as well.
