I don't know how to root devices and can't in my current situation soI'd be stuck with the OS and boatyard.
A Nexus 7 addresses just about all those issues including the cost and bloatware. But do keep in mind an e-ink Kindle or other e-ink devices are generally cheaper even than any decent tablet and have better battery life though they are pretty much just for reading books.
