I have to admit it's slow on my Calibre as well, but then again all the previews are kinda slow...
Has anyone tried it on actual e-reader? (I read the book before so didn't open it on my kindle)

Mine's not kinda slow, there's something wrong with this particular book. For instance I added the Saramago you posted and it loads in less than 2 seconds. That's normal. Three minutes and a huge cpu load means something is stuck in a loop. I just don't know enough about ebooks to diagnose it further.

It opens perfectly on my desktop mobi reader. There are occasions when Calibre can't convert mobi files into epub, or vice versa, especially when the files are too big or perhaps have too many hyperlinks. I remember reading complaints like this before from a guy who tried to convert into epub format Dickens' Complete Works.

BAM!
Checked on my Kindle for PC, works like wonder - smooth and perfectly fine.
There's rather something wrong with that Calibre preview thing, it's nae the first time when that happens.

It was problematic.
I converted it to ePUB and it took me ages to open the ePUB.
What I do in cases like this is open the epub in Sigil and save it again.
Sigil then repairs the minor problems automatically.
After that opening the file with calibre's reader only takes a sec.

Thanks for that, I got it to work too. The problem was the TOC. It had many attribute errors when I validated this in Sigil. I generated a new TOC and saved and the book now opens in less than a second. woohoo. and... after all that it turns out I already have this book in its alternate title. LOL
