I'm using an Android and someone bought me a Kindle book a while back but I didn't get round to reading the end of it.

Since I got the book, Kindle updated their app at least twice, making versions that weren't compatible with my device.

Now I can access the app again, I tried to read my books in there.

Practically all of my free/public-domain books were missing and the paid books only showed in the Archive.
The app demanded I delete the book and re-download it. All my books were saved on my Memory Card so I didn't understand this - I only ever had to re-import them from my card again in the past.

Anyway I followed the stupid instructions and oh look the book is not only gone, but it is demanding I buy it again!

It's been paid for once, I'm not paying again. I'm never giving Kindle money ever again in any form - but I want what they owe me.

Does anyone know how I can get my books back? Especially the ones that were sent as gifts to me?

There's nowhere to contact customer service from the app that I can see and I'm having no luck with the website either. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or even how this happened.

Please - any advice is valuable. I'm sick of Kindle cheating me at every turn. :(

Even better, once I've got my books back, can I convert them to play in a decent ebook reader?

Thanks in advance. Binks

Go to your "cloud" on the app. As far as "gifts" I'm not sure. I've never been "gifted" a book.

Figure how to confine the amazon web pages (manage my kindle) so you can e-mail yourself the books so you can then access them from the cloud. But you do need to find the original .mobi files to do this.

Have you spoken to the customer services at Amazon? They have special Kindle advisors who should be able to help. If the books came from Amazon they will all be in your My Account section. I wish you luck - I have panic attacks at the thought of losing mine.

One telephone number for Amazon customer service
1-206-266-2992

Be prepared to offer explicit detail (your OS and its version #, which Android device and its version #, etc.) Someone at Amazon will help you - IF you help them help you.
