Some favorites of mine:

  • Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber (two pentalogys)
  • Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci books or Howl's Moving Castle Novels (6 books and 3 books respectively - these are more Young Adult)
  • Dennis McKiernan's Once Upon a... novels (5 books)
  • David Eddings's Riven novels (2 pentalogys and 2 prequels)
  • Lawrence Watt-Evans's Ethshar books (15 books)
  • Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles and Lyra novels (4 books and 5 books respectively)
  • Piers Anthony's older Xanth novels (up to about #15 when they turned formulaic)
  • Anythingby Terry Pratchett, who has 42 novels set in the Discworld
  • And then there's the father of modern fantasy, JRR Tolkien, of course.

George R R Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series is my top pick. Another series that I liked quite well is Mark Anthony's The Last Rune series.

Holly Black's Modern Faerie Tales is a must-read. It has three books, Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside.

I don't think you can get more epic than the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It's long (seven books), but full of characters you'll never forget (Oh, Zifnab...), and the ending is beautiful. Seriously, I cannot recommend these books enough.

Man, I think it's been 20 years since I read that one! I had completely forgotten all about it. Time to check for an ebook version I guess.

I definitely second that.

Plus, I'd heartily recommend R. Scott Bakker's Second Apocalypse series, consisting of a trilogy and a tetralogy. Plenty dark and complex.

Also, check out The Acts of Caine by Matthew Stover. The first book in the series, Heroes Die, perfectly works as a stand-alone novel. This is a fantasy/sci-fi hybrid but it's mostly fantasy.

Brent Weeks' The Lightbringer fits the bill as well; solid fantasy with an interesting magic system.

The Raven’s Shadow series by Anthony Ryan might also be work checking out and I've recently enjoyed Brian McClellan's Powder Mage Trilogy.

An often overlooked series is Janny Wurts' The Wars of Light and Shadow the first book is Curse of the Mistwraith.

It is deemed to be a harder read due to the overly descriptive and poetic prose but IMO that is also part of what makes it such a memorable read.

You may also like Robin Hobb's Assassin trilogies and the Liveship Traders series which comes after the first or 2nd trilogy.
