David Eddings Belgariad and Mallorean series,
Raymond Feist's Riftwar and it's sequels,
Terry Brook's Magic Kingdom for Sale,
Tad Williams Dragonbone Chair,
and if you want some laughs with your fantasy, Robert Asprin's MTYH series is pretty good.

godddie wrote:An often overlooked series is Janny Wurts' The Wars of Light and Shadow the first book is Curse of the Mistwraith.

It is deemed to be a harder read due to the overly descriptive and poetic prose but IMO that is also part of what makes it such a memorable read.

You may also like Robin Hobb's Assassin trilogies and the Liveship Traders series which comes after the first or 2nd trilogy.

The Wars of Light and Shadow certainly qualifies as the highest of high fantasy and is her magnum opus (I love Curse of the Mistwaith...the emotional ending was a heck of a payoff for sticking with the book).

But for those who want something less dense, there is also the Empire trilogy that she collaborated with Raymond E. Feist on. That trilogy has the better parts of the two writers. Wurts without Feist tends to be dense and hard to get into(though absolutely worth it), like her Wars of Light and Shadow. Feist without Wurts tends to be meaningless superficial entertainment that is forgettable and mediocre like his Riftwar stuff. The collaboration has less dense and more accessible prose a la Feist, combined with emotional heart a la Wurts.

It is one of the rare instances where the collaboration may be better than the individual writers in some ways.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a good series as far as it goes, but you need to start out with the knowledge that no matter what Martin may say to the contrary, there's a good chance the series will never be finished. If you'll pardon the comparison it's like porno without a money shot,a lot of fun for a while but still, ultimately, disappointing

Runelords by David Farland. The ending is lacking though.
