Hey all I'm looking for a specific rec,

I'm looking for mage protagonists who dabble in the 'taboo' arts (necromancy, blood magic, chaos, or some completely made up school of magic that is lesser known and prejudiced against. You name it). Preferably a series with a small tight knit cast with a unique, complex magic system that is allowed to take the spotlight (basically the more lovingly it's described, the better!). The MC doesn't have to be evil, but I would consider it a plus as we rarely ever see antihero protagonists in the form of dark sorcerers.

This request is partly inspired by The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach and Path to Ascendancy. Malazan mages in general are awesome. :D

Anyone have something that might scratch this itch? Feel free to pitch it even it loosely fits the criteria!

I just recently discovered the new emerging LitRPG genre that was invented a few years ago, so I've been catching up in the past two months. If you don't mind LitRPG, there are some books that fit your criteria. The LitRPG system can be considered a magic system in some respects.

Travis Bagwell's Awaken Online series (first book is Catharsis) has a main character who is a Necromancer, with the rest of the world arrayed aginst him. He fights back by using his magical skills in unconventional ways. Hunting down and killing his enemies.

Life Reset by Shemer Kuznits (New Era Online series) is about a high level mage player who is betrayed by his clan and turned into a weak level 1 NPC goblin monster. But instead of quiting and giving up the game by re-rolling his character as expected (along with losing all the real money tied up in virtual assets that would be inherited by the people who stabbed him in the back), he flees to the other side of the world and begins rebuilding his empire from scratch. Only not as a hero, but as a weak goblin monster with shamanic powers that all players would hunt down and kill if they saw him.

Both selections are some of the better quality works in the nascent LitRPG genre and I do recommend them, beyond just meeting your criteria.

If you want a bit more outside the box, there is the Divine Dungeon series by Dakota Krout. It is in the "dungeon core" subset of LitRPG. The protagonist is a sentient dungeon whose goal is to kill adventurers and absorb their essence to level up magical abilities. Surprisingly, the odd-ball story works and I enjoyed the series. The Divine Dungeon series is probably the best out of the "dungeon core" type books.
