this has been a subject of interest of mine for several years, so i'm looking for recommendations & to compile a decent list of related books.
looking for fiction & non-fiction (memoir, true crime, etc.), although not interested in cult psychology books unless they're particularly good.

Have you read Blown for Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology, by Marc Headley? It's a really interesting view behind the scenes of Scientology.

I could write for days about this, but I'll just drop two:

Bagwhan: The God that Failed by Hugh Milne. Very interesting, insightful stuff on the Orange People.

Jesus Freaks by Don Lattin. All Don Lattin's books are great, but this look at what happened to the child of David Berg, raised in his father's sex cult, is a terrible tragic story.
