Hi guys - I am putting together a bunch of books for my niece, who loves vampire, fantasy etc. stuff. I know NOTHING about vampires other than Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse, and it's a long time since I read fantasy to speak of.

Can y'all recommend any good -- that is well-written and absorbing - series in either category, please? You know, the same sort of level as Sookie Stackhouse when it comes to vampires. It would save me a lot of contemplating pages and pages of posts.

TIA!

Anne Rice: All the books "interview with the vampire", "Lestad", etc... There are quite a few of them.

Salem' Lot by Stephen King (for me his best book and one of the best ones about vampires).

Hope you enjoy them!!!

Merche

Thanks for that - I read the Anne Rice books way back when - they were great - AND Salem's Lot, but had forgotten and so will get those. He does some amazing books. (My favourite of his probably The Stand.) Surprised I didn't get more responses to this one given the volume of that sort of book out there - I am lost as to where to even begin! :(

How old is she? The only vampire series i ever read was the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. She just released book 21 in the series, so obviously they are still selling. I loved the first few books, lots of actions and a tough main character, but then it changed into a romance bore. The action does tends to be a bit violent, that's why i asked how old she is. If she is old enough, give her the first few Anita Blake books.

I solemnly swear to never ever post romance crap.

There are also another vampires series by P N Elrod: The Vampire Files. There are quite PG by I really like them a lot. So doesn't matter the age of your niece (well, if she is over 14-15). Have a look at them and let me know what do you think about them.

Besos,

Merche

Depends how old she is but the house of night series by pc cast was good and also the fever series by karen marie moning BUT its more adult so depends on how old she is. The Host by Stephanie Meyer was also good- More adult than Twilight. The Mating Set by Laurann Dohner is about Warewolves and is also adult but good.

Oh brilliant - thanks so much all of you - that gives me plenty to play with. My niece is 41 so adult is okay!! (I told her she's far too old for vampire lit, but there you go!!) I read that vampire/horror stuff in my younger life but now I'm in my 60s I just read trashy crime ... mostly. Loved Dracula, BTW @mfgovideo!

My niece is currently reading the Queen Betsy "Undead" series my MaryJanice Davidson, FWIW - says they are very entertaining. I bought her some for her birthday on Amazon last night and read a little bit ..... not my thing, I'm afraid.

Does she like werewolves too? Because, although the main characters are more on the fuzzy side, the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs are pretty good and there are several stories in those where vampires have a pivotal role, including her friend(?), Stephan.

Also with a shape-shifting main character, but a lot more vampires, is the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter. She's a shape-shifter who hunts down rogue vampires.

(All available here, just search for the author's LAST name. )

I second the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Also the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost is really entertaining. My absolute fav is the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, but the vampires are not sexy, they are kind of beasts. It is a supernatural world and the main character is more of a witch i guess. If you go with this series, skip the first book. It was the authors' first and even they agree it is rough. Go right to the second book and she won't be missing anything.

A great but really different take on vampires is Sunshine by Robin McKinley. It is a stand alone book by one of the great fantasy writers of her generation! I highly recommend it for anybody who loves good world building.

I hope she enjoys your gift!

The vampire academy series is amazing, I cried alot when I read it.
Also I liked the first book of the Chicagoland Vampires, but I didn't read the rest because it's just that I can't get into a story where the leading hero has a long hair. I hate long hair on guys so it killed the mood for me :(
