I just read the first 4 chapters (they are available on Jim Butcher's site), and it's kind of a disappointment to me. It doesn't seem all that great, yet. I hope it's just a slow start and it gets better later, but I always disliked how the Dresden Files was just a series of loosely fitted episodes, barely any coherence series-wise.

The new episode of the Iron Druid series (#5 of 6) is released tomorrow as well, and even though critics say it's just a Dresden Files knock-off, I say it's taken all that's good in the Dresden Files and made it into a better series.
Atticus is also not annoying, unlike Harry. (How can I even like a series, when I hate the main character whose POV I'm following all along? Dresden Files is a mystery to me in this sense.)

Yeah, can't wait either. U.S and Canada get it a lot earlier than us in Europe :(

I'm curious how Hearne's handled the time skip. Often ruins perfectly good books. As for Dresden - Changes was brilliant and EPIC, but Ghost Story was a major "meh" kinda book. Hopefuly Butcher got his shit together and well see a return to form. The first four chapters really show very little of substance so its hard to say how good the new book will be.

(previous episode spoilers)
I agree, Changes was really great, it's among my favorite books. I also loved Ghost Story though, almost as much as Changes. I liked how so much changed in 6 months, how everything has gone to hell. I liked Harry's struggles, Molly's cruel fate, the new team that gathered. What I loved the most were the parts with the Leananshide and the revelations of Harry's childhood. And I didn't expect the twist at the end. Really, sometimes I think it was better than Changes... sometimes. These last 2 episodes really looked like they were finally going to put this whole series on a more coherent storyline.

That's why I was waiting for this book, but these first 4 chapters aren't only slow, but he doesn't even mention the outside world and people, or any desire to meet them. Of course, Harry practically said goodbye to everyone at the end of Ghost Story. Kind of makes you think why...

The official forum says it's released at midnight PST, which means 9 am CET for me I guess.

(As for the Iron Druid: yes, 6 years - or 12, if you haven't read the novella - is going to be strange. All the previous episodes had only a couple of weeks in-between - which has been another positive thing versus the Dresden Files in my opinion. But I'm sure it will work out.)

I can't wait either and I have to wait longer because I always go for the Audio book, which takes longer to get posted. :( Worth it though.

I liked Ghost story, I love the whole series though and I'm not having any problem seeing the big story arch going on behind the scenes. If anything, I like it more because each book takes place 6 months or more apart. Far more realistic to me and it makes the world feel more real. Harry has a life outside of what we see. I feel like he's living on when I put the book down and that when I rejoin him, he's been doing a lot. I love the hits dropped about things that happened that we never see. And I also really like that the arch for the series is only hinted at and foreshadowed and peeked here and there. Another thing I find more reminiscent of real life, that we do things that have long lived and often unseen consequences that we find out about much later and bite us in the ass, or come back to give us a hand. It makes the world seem a lot bigger and a little less contrived for the sake of plot.

The big scare about the Dresden metastory is that there isnt one, that its gonna be a book version of Lost. All that foreshadowing, all the setup, all the characters and in the end the whole buildup is followed by a brainfart by the author. Butcher has always claimed that he has the whole thing planned and mapped and that he knows where he's going but that's really difficult to believe. We'll see.

PS thanks for the reminder about the novella, I was just wondering what to do tonight. hopefuly its gonna be a nice warmup for the actual book :)

That's one thing I am hoping doesn't happen in Cold Days even though I know it will(it's what Jim Butcher does).
I wish the book would start off right where we left it. With Harry as the new Winter Knight and Maab taking him to Fairie to be introduced as such. I am really looking forward to when Harry reunites with everyone and am really hoping the book doesn't start off 6 months later and everyone already knows Harry is alive.
I can't wait to read this book. I love this series and soon as it hits online in ebook format I will be grabbing a copy for my Kindle and starting the book immediately.

You can read the first 4 chapters right now on Jim Butcher's site. Not a lot happens in them, but there are some hints on the time difference.

I actually liked Lost, because even though it was very long, it was a continuous story, unlike the Dresden Files. Sometimes there are hints, some episodes include some elements to suggest a big storyline behind, but really, up until the last 2 episodes, the Dresden Files was just a bunch of books with their own little wizard-detective stories one after another. I expected more.
Lost never tried to do that, it was a flow and people couldn't just start watching it from the 3rd season and get the whole thing. Butcher, on the other hand, is trying hard to introduce everything in every episode, so that anyone can pick up any book in the series without a problem.

I don't want to complain, but these first 4 chapters brought up some bitterness in me for this series, even though I loved it towards the latest episodes. I guess it's because I read the Iron Druid series not so long ago and in many ways I liked it a lot more. The wit is not annoying, for one. I wish Harry would just shut up most of the time with his supposedly-funny wisecracks. The pop-culture references mostly feel forced too. I don't want to start comparing in a DF thread, but the Iron Druid just flows better. It's like DF is my grandpa trying to be cool, acting like a youth, but it's just awkward, while the ID really is the cool kid, the fresh series.
I was hoping Changes would break the repetition of the same old concept, and then Ghost Story really was different, but the start of this episode seems like a return to the old (and to me, boring) ways, but I hope I'm wrong.

I could explain it more, but it doesn't matter. I'll read both and I'm gonna love both, I'm sure. Both Iron Druid #5, because it's new and I like it more; and Dresden Files #14, because I've already read 13 freaking books in the series (+stories) so I got familiar with it, and it's on a high note now because of #12 and #13.

Thanks for the info but I think I am just going to wait. I think it might just be too much of a tease to be able to read only 4 chapters and wait for the rest. If I'm lucky the entire ebook will be out just after midnight and I can start reading then.

Got the Dresden Files and Iron Druid Chronicles to look forward to tomorrow. Woohoo!
Then I will get back to reading the Sandman Slim Series.
