How about The Road by Cormac McCarthy? I also liked World Made By Hand by James Howard Kuntsler. There are also some good post-nuclear war books - Alas, Babylon, The Postman, On the Beach, Canticle for Leibowitz, The Postman, Wolf and Iron. There's also Patriots by John Wesley Rawles. He gets kind of preachy and is kind of heavy on telling you minute details about things - exactly what caliber rifle someone had kind of stuff. I think he does it to educate but sometimes it gets kind of long.
I agree with you about the zombie stuff; I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's suggestions.

The Survivors by Terry Nation has always been a fave. I also like Kent David Kelly's From the Fire trilogy (word of advice, get the "From the Fire - Trilogy One (Episodes I-III)" as he had issues with reader reviewers complaining and released part 3 in this way).

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller or the Dust Lands Series by Moira Young, maybe? (The latter is YA, though)

There is a YA series I recently picked up by Mike Mullin that is interesting. The first book in it is called "Ashfall" and its about a volcano eruption apocalypse. I was impressed with it. And although it was a YA it was riding the cusp of being a little more adult-ish in some areas.

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
The Chrysalids is set in the future after a devastating global nuclear war. David, the young hero of the novel, lives in a tight-knit community of religious and genetic fundamentalists, who exist in a state of constant alert for any deviation from what they perceive as the norm of God's creation, deviations broadly classified as 'offenses' and 'blasphemies.
Great book!!

Never read Earth Abides but The Last Centurion by John Ringo is a pretty good read IMO.

This is not my favorite genre but I LOVED The Dog Stars by Peter Heller and LOVED Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
Liked (but not loved) The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood and The Road by Cormac McCarthy as well.

Another great oldie, like Earth Abides: by Pat Frank, Alas, Babylon.
The 3 books of the Hunger Games series, although for young adults, are good.
Two favorites, which have similarities, are: Stephen King's "The Stand", and Robert McCammon's "Swan Song".
Enjoy!

"A Wrinkle in the Skin" and "The death of Grass" by John Christopher, and "Fugue for a Darkling Island", by Christopher Priest. Also, if you can find it, there's an old children's fiction trilogy called "The Changes" by Peter Dickinson, it contains no zombies, vampires or aliens, but is a little...unique
