So. I have been searching for books with animals, any animals as the main character or as a animal featureing in the storys. I have read a few books by Jacques Brian, while of course they were good,I'd like something similar or in your opinion better.
I am a animal fan,as can be guessed by this topic, and find such books as the Duncton series interesting.although I have yet to start reading it. any recommendations? and if you got a link to the books you suggest, more the better!
Thanks,
grryfindore.

The fist book that came to my mind is: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

It is told from the dogs point of view and is funny, and heartbreaking both. I loved it and I am not usually a big fan of animal books. I passed it on to friends who also loved it.

Another vote for The Art of Racing in the Rain! LOVED IT! And I know nothing about racing cars and am not a dog person but it's one of my favorites. I loved it so much I went out and paid FULL PRICE for the author's other two kindle books which were good but no where near as fabulous at TAORITR.

Thor by Wayne Smith is told from the family dog's point of view. Semi-horror story involving a lycanthropic uncle visiting the family and how the dog deals with him.

Edit: Oh, yeah, it was the basis for the movie Bad Moon Rising which included the family dog but did not make him the central focus as the novel does.

I like cats as book characters, and there are several good series available out there:

1. Shirley Rousseau Murphy has a series about cat Joe Grey, who seems to be quite good at investigating. Joe has a female sidekick to help him with his "detecting".
2. Sophie Kelly has a series [thus far, 3 books], the first of which is called: Curiosity Thrilled the Cat
3. Rita Mae Brown has a series featuring several cats and a Corgi dog....set in Virginia hunt country. Sneaky Pete Brown is listed as a co-author for the series.
4. LeAnn Sweeney, Cats in Trouble series; I believe there a 4 thus far. I've read the 1st one, and it was fun.
5. Judi McCoy has a Dog Walker series, light mystery type. I have 6, but not yet read any of them.
6. Donna Andrews has the Meg Langslow series. Meg is a blacksmith who crafts metal into useful [to sell] things, with an often-times dysfunctional family. There are always a bunch of animals...cats, dogs, birds, peacocks, owls. Fun series! One of my favorites.

Enjoy!

Try Watership Down. They're all rabbits!

A summary:

One of the most beloved novels of our time, Richard Adams's Watership Down takes us to a world we have never truly seen: to the remarkable life that teems in the fields, forests and riverbanks far beyond our cities and towns.

It is a powerful saga of courage, leadership and survival; an epic tale of a hardy band of adventurers forced to flee the destruction of their fragile community . . . and their trials and triumphs in the face of extraordinary adversity as they pursue a glorious dream called "home."

Watership Down is a remarkable tale of exile and survival, of heroism and leadership . . . the epic novel of a group of adventurers who desert their doomed city, and venture forth against all odds on a quest for a new home, a sturdier future.

Have you read the classics like Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Call of the Wild/White Fang by Jack London or even Old Yeller by Fred Gipson ? They are all quite good.

You could also check the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb, I remember quite fondly the wolf character which played an important part in the story.
