Unfortunately I haven't read any of the ones you mentioned (really only a dabbler when it comes to Sci-Fi myself) so no direct comparison but I enjoyed the Lt. Leary Series by David Drake.

First book is With the Lightnings and is available from the Baen website as a free download - never checked if it was available here...

If you don't care that the main character is a woman... yeah you posted it should be male but well... why? It's a book... lol

Anyways http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3174 ... son_Master is a good fantasy/adventure book

A sci-fi one would be http://www.goodreads.com/series/56124-a ... e-universe series, it's kind of a love/murder mystery (basically it's playing CLUE on a spaceship looking for the murderer while dealing with love) It takes a few chapters to get into this series since the first chapters of the first book gives background on what/where/why they are in the spaceship. But it lets you get into the main character's mind/pov very well for a murder mystery

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13451182-arena-one is a good one for a post-apocalyptic future, has some zombie-like things (not sure they are called zombies but they are)

Have you tried "The Witcher" series by Andrzej Sapkowski? I've just fallen in love with it. The first two books are stories but they all have the same main character (the Witcher) and they join together afterwards so it's complex, but consistent. Not mentioning that the Witcher himself seems so absolutely real.

plus "The Last Wish and Blood of the Elves book have been officially translated into English, while the other books are freely available at the Witcher Forum Community Fan Translations."

If you are still looking for something, I am a sci-fi series enthusiast. Try frontiers saga by ryk brown, Galaxy unkown series by Thomas deprima, doom star series by Vaughn Heppner and the star carrier series by ian douglas. I can go on an on, so let me know if these fit your taste.

Whilst David Weber is known for his Honor Harrington books (with a female lead), he has also written a series commencing with Off Armageddon Reef - an epic series with this gripping far-future saga, which springboards off the near-destruction of humanity in a massive war with the alien Gbaba.

Have you tried Tom Kratman's "Desert Called Peace" series or his "Countdown" series? Both are good.

There's also John Ringo's "Posleen War" series and "Looking Glass" series.
