I started reading and writing when I was young. As soon as I COULD read, I read everything. The backs of shampoo bottles, every book in the house, the Bible, my mother's books ( I was expressly FORBIDDEN to read VC Andrews Flowers in the Attic and most of her Danielle Steel books-- read them anyway). I loved the library, always had books checked out. I started writing in elementary, in a small composition book. Wrote all through high school and won a small scholarship for my writing in high school, won contests in college.

For me, it's an escape. It's why I enjoy fiction over non fiction, even literary non fiction is not 'made up' enough for me. I did not have a happy childhood. Books let me hide in my room and retreat into a world better than my own.

NOW, I read for sheer enjoyment. I love a good story, especially a historical fiction based in the US.

I started reading wikipedias at the age of six but I didn't really get into any fiction until I was 8. I suppose I started because I was curious.

I can't actually remember when I started, but I know I am the only one in my family who reads this much. Neither of my parents or siblings read. I started out with the Client my first adult book at the age of 10 OMG what was I thinking!!
Now I read for the simple pleasure of escaping the real world.
Genre doesn't matter - as long as its not EL James and Sylvia Day...

I'm not even sure I understand the question because I've always read. :/ I could read well enough at 18 months old. I was reading "adult" books of all kinds before age 5 (the age when most people think you're looking at pictures in the library then gasp when they realise you're reading heavy text from the adult sections of the library). They ran out of Reading Grades before I hit school. I was also reading in two languages (in a one-language country - it's not multi-lingual where I live).
Why I read....? I like it!
I like knowing things and I like well written stories.
But I don't come from a place where anyone ever says "what choo reading for?". :/

I always remember reading, I don't actually know how old I was when I started as my mum helped me to learn to read when I was pretty young. There was always a stack of books in my room from the youngest age I can remember and I couldn't imagine it being any other way. I think my first real chapter book was second grade and I've never turned back.

I remember the first book I read was "The Eyes of Laura Mars" when I was 13 I think. My mom has this book and I got curious so I read it too. Then I moved one to Agatha Christie, Sydney Sheldon and some romance novels. Though I did try "Sweet Dreams", you know the teen pocket books that was all the rage back then? But moved on quickly to others. I just found the other books more interesting and less lame at the time.

I love the way I can escape and immerse myself into different worlds and lives of other people. It's just so addicting. Thank God foe e-book readers, now I don't have to haul my books wherever I go and just hold on to my reader and can read anytime I want.

I started reading around 4th or 5th grade. Before that , while i did not absolutely hate to read, but i did not like to. I was introduced to books that i found interesting, and combining that with my parents paying my sister and me to read during summer. I've boon hooked since. Although my tastes have changed from the animal stories to fantasy and sci-fi.

I started reading novels at the age of 17. Not that I had no interest in reading stuff but... was never into reading 'stories' except for my exams. :)

My first read was HP7 which I picked up due to its high hype. And then it went on to read the whole series after which it was.... reading and reading and reading.

Why did I started?

Out of curiosity in the beginning. But then I gave one English exam in which my score was near perfect.

Now I read to improve my vocabulary and enjoyment. *Killing two birds with 1 stone* :)

I started really reading when I was about 8. I used reading as an escape. I would find a hiding place, a flashlight, my books and read. I used to always be that kid in school that had a book at all times. I took it to lunch and read, I went to the library practically every day, and I always had the most books read per school year award. I don't use them as an escape anymore, but my love of reading is still there :)

I don't remember how old I was when I began to read. I think that I may have been 4 and I taught myself to read because I was bored. No TV in those days and papers everywhere; I apparently got hold of my mom's bilingual copy of the Arabian Nights (English and Chinese) and started reading that. The book disappeared before I could make any sense of the Chinese, darn it.
