I started reading Redshirts by John Scalzi but was wondering if there are recommendations for more of his literary works. I don't want something too far fetched in the Sci-Fi genre. Something light and entertaining.

Anybody read The Human Division yet?

The Human Division was a very well thought out and put together novel. Scalzi's attention to detail, to the story, to the world building and to the characters in once again proven meritorious of the accolades he's gotten.

With that out of the way, if you haven't read the Old Man's War trilogy, this novel gives you the cliff notes to it and let's you in on what's going on. Classifying the novel as SciFi is a disservice to it really, it is a good novel set in a fantasy world (as many good and great novels are) a novel about the indomitable human spirit, it's ingenuity and resilience; about love and honor. All of the ingredients that you'll find in any good book.

With a bit of fantastic SciFi thrown in.

Old Man War series.

Got the first two or three in hardback from a SciFi Book club because they sounded interesting. Been reading pretty much everything he writes ever since.

Basic starting plot line: Galactic war in progress. Everyone on earth stuck on earth unless they join up. BUT, you have to be 75 years old BEFORE you can sign up.

Came in specifically to recommend Old Man's War, and it's sequels.

Those are the ones that made him so well known now. He had a couple he wrote before those, but ...? Not so sure I like his messing with one of my favorites though (Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper). I like it as it was originally written.

Have you read his remake yet? That was the first I've heard of him, and I haven't read it yet. I plan to reread all the Little Fuzzy books by H. Beam Piper, then the sequels by other authors, THEN the remake.

Honestly, I have not. I get a bit peeved when someone messes with the "classics".

I liked "Little Fuzzy" as it was originally written. I see no need to mess with what works. I DO have it (the reworked version), I just have not read the it yet. The way it was written by H. Beam Piper is the way I want to remember it. It is a great story as is. I am firmly of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" category though.

I haven't read Scalzi's Old Man's War series yet, but having read The Human Division, I'm looking forward to it. That was a very well-written and consistent series of episodes/novellas/short stories that really build the world in your imagination, and such relateable characters - does anyone else appreciate the civilian vs. military mindset descriptions? I read his Fuzzy Nation first - with the hope that it would not ruin my appreciation of Piper's original series. His re-write of Pappy Jack's character is disturbing, but the storyline is entirely plausible from a lawyer's perspective; after all, have you ever wondered what a disbarred lawyer can do?

Me too. Most definitely. I've read all except Human Division, but it's in my Kindle.
With about 100 other books I've yet to read :D
