Hello all,

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I have been reading paranormal stuff since before it was called paranormal.

However, with the current popularity of Paranormal Romance, it is harder and harder to find good paranormal fiction that is NOT romance.

I am looking for some suggestions here please!

Books I have read and loved:

The Dresden Files: Jim Butcher

Nightside Novels: Simon R Green

Imp Series: Debra Dunbar

Anita Blake: Laurell K Hammilton

The Hollows: Kim Harrison

Thanks in advance!!

Try :

* Twenty Palaces trilogy, by Harry Connolly. Very nice series, with an intriguing setup and characters.

* Peter Grant (Rivers of London) by Ben Aaronovitch. UF series in London. At times much darker than say Dresden, but can also be very funny and weird.

* Nathaniel Cade by Christopher Farnsworth. Follows a vampire working for the US president.

* Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. I really like the main character and his adventures are refreshing.

* Markhat by Frank Tuttle. Great series, one of my favorites. Fast reads too.

* Deacon Chalk by James R. Tuck. Lots of action.

* Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Similar to Dresden Files but with a druid instead of a wizard.

* Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia. Non stop action. Reminded me of the Supernatural TV show.

* Felix Castor by Mike Carey. Interesting series following an exorcist. Nice take on ghosts and demons (his explanation on what demons are in the last books was a great idea). Great characters.

* Vlad Taltos by Steven Brust. Not sure if it can be classified as UF, but it's in a fantasy setting and follows a hard boiled like hero.

* Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey.

* American Gods and Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. Must read.

* Mercedes Thompson by Patricia Briggs. More romance than those listed above but still good.

Jennifer Esteps the Spider series, it does have some minor love interest stuff going on, but very very minor in relation to the action packed crazy.
I second the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs too.

They don't have any more love interest action in them than the Hollows did, about the same level of stuff. The occasional smooch and wondering if a relationship will work and that's about it.

Great recommendations so far!

In addition, I highly recommend the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning; Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones; Black Wings series by Christina Henry; Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs (in world of Mercy Thompson, some overlapping characters); Alex Craft series by Kalayna Price; Zoe Martinique series by Phaedra Weldon; and Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

You might also try the Cal Leandros or Trickster series by Rob Thurman; October Daye series by Seanan McGuire; Black London series by Caitlin Kittredge; Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neil; Sweep series by Cate Tiernan; Morganville Vampire or Weather Wardens series by Rachel Caine; Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward; Mortal Instruments or Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Claire; Modern Faerie Tale series by Holly Black; Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews; Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh; Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter; Bobby Dollar series by Tad Williams; Greywalker series by Kat Richardson; Otherworld and Indigo Court series by Yasmine Galenorn.

For a bit more YA type of read, I recommend the Dark Powers series by Kelley Armstrong; Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith; Darke Academy series by Gabrielle Poole; Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep; and Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins.

Question: What's it like to be the smartest person in the room?
Answer: It sucks. It means you're in the wrong room. ;)

The Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch as recommended above is one of my favorite series currently being written. I'd also recommend London Falling and its sequel, The Severed Streets, by Paul Cornell. They're very dark mystery novels about a small group within the London PD who accidentally get granted The Sight, which allows them to see all the spirits and monsters inhabiting the city, while investigating a series of murders (of children, by a witch, natch). It's a little confusing to get into at first because the characters aren't immediately distinguishable, but once you're 30-40 pages in it's hard to put down. The sequel is in my opinion even better, since it fleshes out the world much more and features a cameo of Neil Gaiman, which is at first just a small gag but develops into something that's probably going to be a part of later novels.

This was probably already said, but C.E. Murphy's Walker Papers series. Absolutely loved it and hated to see it finished.

Also Allyson James' Stormwalker series is great as well, but there is romance in it so fair warning.
