Hiya, I'm looking for fantasy books/series (I prefer magic but I'm open minded for other genres) where the romance between the female protagonist and male character is like in the Poison Study series by Maria v.Snyder, the immortal series by Tamora Pierce and The black magician series by Trudy Canavan. As in the heroine is not sure (and us readers too) if the male character likes the heroine for some time. If they were in a teacher/apprentice relationship or similar would be a plus. Like in these series, I'd like the romance to be a strong element of the storyline but not the main part. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this fits what you are looking for but it crossed my mind and is a good enough book in my opinion to be mentioned and recommended. It's the Fae Chronicles by Amelia Hutchins. I enjoyed this series I hope you do too..

you might like the Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs, The hollows series by Kim Harrison (although the female character changes boyfriends through the course of the series she does have that "he's kind of a jerk okay well maybe not so bad hell I dunno" thing going on with most of them...at the moment I can't pull up anymore to mind but I would suggest looking at those authors on amazon and seeing what other authors amazon suggests linked to them, that works well for me in finding new titles. Good luck!

I don't know it you're still looking for this kind of books, but I wanted to recommend Shanna Swendson's Enchanted, Inc.-series and Lois McMaster Bujold's Sharing Knife series. The first one is contemporary fantasy with a slowly building romantic subplot. The second series is romantic fantasy. It doesn't have 'real magic' and has a dual POV, but this series fit your teacher/apprentice dynamic in my eyes because he's older and shows her the world.

I haven't read any of the books/authors you've mentioned, but I'd like to recommend the Tiger & Del books by Jennifer Roberson. They are fantasy books set in a secondary world and are of the 'sword-and-sorcery' variety rather than 'epic' - meaning they contain a narrower focus on one or two individuals rather than taking a more comprehensive view of larger events. Roberson has a very easy and fluid way of writing and she treats her characters with much more maturity than you would normally expect. In these books, one of the central themes is the developing relationship between the main characters, but it's less about the romance and more about mutually shared experiences fostering deeper understanding even through hardships and antagonistic world-views/attitudes. I would be hard pressed to call it romance - there are no agonising bits of sudden realisations that one has feelings for another - more that's it just very well done interpersonal dynamics (almost nonchalant). Subtle and realistic amidst fantastical adventures. The first book is a short, fast and easy read if you want to give it a go: Sword-Dancer. The books are told from the wryly humorous perspective of the male lead. It also *kind of* fits the teacher/apprentice dynamics you're looking for.

Try the All Souls Trilogy, by Deborah Harkness. The male prot. is a vampire, his female opposite is a witch. Great romance, time travel, and lots of excitement and mystery. Once I started on this series, it was very hard to put down.....for more than a minute or two!
