Not having read 299 Days, I really can't comment on it. But two of my favorites in that genre are Swansong by Robert McCammon and The Stand by Stephen King. One of the old classics, which I think is great, is Nevil Shute's On the Beach. Another old classic, equally good, by Pat Frank, is Alas, Babylon.
