I am getting back into reading sci-fi books and I am looking for some suggestions. I like futuristic books like The First Light Chronicles and space travel not a huge fan of time travel unless it involves an alternate present or future.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

You should check C.J. Cherryh. She has many SF series, and all are worth a read. My favorite is The Faded Sun trilogy but I'm also an avid follower of her ongoing series Foreigner (15 books now !). Compact Space (Chanur), Company Wars and Cytenn are also very good.

Since you like space travel you should try Golden Age of the Solar Clipper by indie author Nathan Lowell. Nice series about a crewman aboard a deep space commercial freighter.

Other than that, if you don't mind space operas you could try :

You might try The Last Rune series by Mark Anthony. Here is a link to the author/series: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/a/mark-anthony/
It takes place in two worlds...the modern world in Colorado, and an alternative universe set in more or less in a medieval time.

I strongly recommend the Cyber Chronicles series by T C Southwell. The first book is free on Amazon.

The first book in the series all takes place on one planet, But as the series progresses, It changes to space travel as well as other planets.

T C Southwell is a brilliant author and her writing makes you feel as if you are right there along with the characters. She is one of the few authors I have read Every book for - of which she has alot - and I can honestly say, Every single one of her book's is amazing.

I would say Jeffrey Carver. I would start with Neptune Crossing and read the rest in his series. Neptune Crossing can be a bit slow at times, but if you get through it, the rest are well worth the bits of slow in the first book.

thanks everyone for the pointers :)

I'm a big fan of the Asimov & Clarke classics, but if you're willing to try something different:

- Solaris by Stanislaw Lem
- Out of the Silent Planet by CS Lewis
- Prisoners of Power by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky
- The Crucible of Time by John Brunner
- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

and more standard fare that I would also recommend:

- the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson
- Tau Zero by Poul Anderson
- the Worthing Saga by Orson Scott Card

and a couple I haven't yet read myself, but I've seen good recommendations:

- A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge
- K-PAX by Gene Brewer

Peter Hamilton's Great North Road is a great book, if you're just getting back into the genre and don't want to commit to a series

If you can still find them, try Juanita Coulson's "Children of the Stars" series:
1. Tomorrow's Heritage
2. Outward Bound
3. Legacy of Earth
4. The Past of Forever

All of Arthur C. Clarke's books should be on any sf fan's must read list. IMHO Rendez-Vous with Rama being the best. It provides the reader with insight as to what the word "alien world" may truly mean. Read it! You'll find out what I mean.

Also try reading any of Robert J. Sawyer's books. He a Canadian rising star in the sf world, often compared to the likes of Asimov and Clarke, with many book awards under his belt.

The Sparrow is a pretty good twist on a first contact story.

Jack McDevitt's Priscilla Hutchins and Alex Benedict books.
David Brin's Uplift series, starting with Sundiver.

Oh yes, for the books that are considered the grandfather of space opera nothing beats E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series.

Ann Leckie's Ancillary Sword was fascinating and nominated for numerous awards. It can be a little tricky to get into, but I feel that the payoff is definitely worth it.

Also have to second The Sparrow, and its sequel, Children of God. Beautiful books, with a take on 'first contact' I haven't seen before
