I'd really recommend Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series, which starts with Archangels' Blood. The main heroine of the series, Elena Deveraux, is a guild hunter. Think bounty hunter, but you hunt vampires and collect a really nice paycheck...if the vampire doesn't kill you before you apprehend him/her. Elena's definitely a badass. I'd also recommend J.D. Robb's In Death series, which starts with Naked in Death. The heroine, Eve Dallas is a kick butt homicide detective, and Roarke is one of the best romance heroes ever (IMHO).

Try the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Kate is the mistress of snark and smart-ass comments, but she's very skilled with a sword and can back up what she says. First book is Magic Bites.
The Miss Fortune series by Jana DeLeon. A highly skilled CIA agent gets a massive bounty put on her head and has to hide in the small town of Sinful, Louisiana. Fitting into normal society would be hard enough for the heroine, but this town lives the definition of 'quirky' to a hilarious degree. First book is Louisiana Longshot.
The Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. The heroine is a skilled assassin who has a darn good reason for her career choice. She's also the owner of a BBQ joint called the Pork Pit that I wish I could visit in real life. First book is Spider's Bite.

I second the Others series by Anne Bishop. Meg isn't technically a badass, but she is stubborn as hell and won't give up. She's naive but not stupid, and is eager to learn how to live. First book is Written in Red.
