SupermanBatlinski wrote:Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there could help me with knowledge about goodreads (or any other efficient way to find books). Maybe I've been doing it wrong, but I've been searching goodreads with keywords, and then all the books with that word in the title pop up for me, because thats the only way I know how to do it (so mate, omega, mpreg etc and books with that in the title pop up) and it's worked OKAY. (not great but not a bust).
I was wondering how to search for...things not in the title. So like right now I have a hankering for vampire/werewolf love. But that's not an efficient thing to type, cause you know it's not always in a title. So does anyone know a better way or can anyone instruct me on what I'm doing wrong and the right way to search for any particular type of book?
Thank you a bunch!
And happy mothers day to all the mommies out there:) I hope your day was wonderful and filled with love <3

I love the Listopia section on Goodreads for this sort of search, it's a crowdsourced list function so someone creates a list for "M/M with smaller tops" or whatever and people can add books that fit to the list.
So you'd go to the listopia section and use those keywords you were searching for in that search bar and it'll bring up any lists that have been tagged as matching what you're looking for.
Here's the main page (you can find it as "Lists" in the Browse dropdown menu too)
https://www.goodreads.com/list
and here's a search for "omega"
https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search_type=lists&q=omega
It's also worth noting people can add books that don't fit to lists too (sometimes because they're mistaken, sometimes because they're jerks) so check the description for the book to make sure it's worth your time, don't just rely on it being on the list and assume it fits what you want because it's there.
It's not as good for looking for books that combine particular things unless there's enough of those books to be a viable list. But sometimes you get lucky, like here's one for Vampire/Werewolf mates
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/77211.Best_Vampire_Werewolf_Romance
I just got that one by searching "werewolf vampire m/m" so it's definitely worth trying when you're looking for something but the more obscure the terms the less your chances of finding much. Looking for "spider alien/red panda shifter m/m romance" probably isn't going to get you any results but it's still a pretty good resource for most things.

Greenbriar gives some great advice here.
I would add that goodreads special interest groups are also a good way to find books you may like. Groups have a bookshelf section, and some very dedicated members mark books with very reliable tags. You'll have a hard time finding errors in there.
For example, the take a look at the tags for the MM-Romance group. You will find book categorised in a number of ways. Here are a few tags (out of 330 total tags) - just to give you an idea of how well it's tagged:
