hello! i'm not exactly new to m/m novels but not widely read either, and i'd like to ask for some recommendations of a similar-to vein.

most of these are fantasy or historical, but actually there's no restrictions on the setting - i'm angling more for authors with the same or higher writing quality, who write in the same way, not necessarily authors who write about exactly the same things. :)

here's a list of authors i've enjoyed:

kj charles: probably most known for the magpie series but like her other stuff just as much if not more tbh, especially protags with more unusual jobs - i like how she works with historical england in general.

cs pacat: captive prince aka dat slow burn! delicious character development. i also like how it has political intrigue, rooftop chases, swordfights, war battles, etc. i like a nice overarching plot outside romance.

    amy rae durreson
: the reawakening series. i like the scope of this one, that it has many various vibrant characters, including many awesome women. and dragons. i also enjoyed her other books.

jordan l. hawk: some of the widdershins books' plot structure is redundant, but i like that the main couple grow together through the books (their relationships with others, too), that again it has a bigger plot, and how quirky the town is. her hexworld is also fun.

alexis hall: i enjoyed the prosperity books (yay for things like phlogiston, and beasties in the skies) and the for real book, and will make my way through more

on the flip side, some established authors might not be for me. i've tried josh lanyon's adrien english series 1&2 but the pacing and mysteries, plus jake, weren't exactly my thing. i've just started mary calmes' matter of time book 1 and the writing is rough imo?

so please, hit me with your recs. and we can talk about what we liked and disliked to refine our recs more.

Mary Calmes is a very fine author. Consider trying her Marshalls, L'ange or Mangrove series. That being said, i'm not fond of her Change of Heart series. She has a few standalone Novels/Novellas that I have read and re-read several times that I simply adore (Frog, Mine and Acrobat.)

T.J. Klune - tear-jerker, overcoming of obstacles, major life lesson reveals and HFN (happy for now)

B.A. Tortuga - cowboys, hats and twang with a bit of wolves and bdsm thrown in. (Did I mention cowboys?)

Anna Zabo & Hedi Cullinan - lots of laughter, maybe a song or too, geeks, nerds and lots of tech. Definite author reads to anyone's list

Will have to check out the authors you mentioned. They're new to me and worth a read!

Thanks.

i tried acrobat; calmes is just one of those authors i probably can't get into. :( i liked it better than the first one but she's probably just not for me? she uses tropes that i'm not too fond of and the romance didn't have enough... idk how to say it, "meat??" for me.

klune though, thanks for that rec! i enjoyed several books of his, and now i'm onto tortuga. i've actually encountered cullinan before, but now i've got to read more.

TJ Klune is amazing and his books are just amazing. I particularly adored How To Be A Normal Person.
Heidi Cullinan is my all time favorite author of M/M romance, and some of her books helped me come out to my friends and family. So yeah, I owe her books a huge thanks. My favorite by her is Antisocial.
There's also Benjamin Alire Sáenz and Adam Silvera, those two have seriously wonderful books that treat so many issues like mental illness, AIDS, coming out and unrequited love, along with a side of loss that came from being torn apart between two sides.
A.M Arthur has some good stuff too, specially Saints series.
I hope those help you if you didn't read them already, and what I liked about them is that they have some plot and actual character development, not like some other M/M books i read that are just porn without any plot.
Oh, before I forget, The Herald-Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey is really good. If you liked The Captive Prince by P.S Pacat, then you will like this. It almost the same thing, magic, wars, lots of irony and smartassness and did i say wars? Yes, well...Hope you like them. :)
