Jake is homophobic and seems to hate himself and all gay guys. So . . .

Why does everyone love these guys and this series?

perhaps certain developments happen later that endear jake to the readers? i stopped reading at this point, myself.

but that sort of thing has happened before - like, i know a lot of people who dislike captive prince book 1 because ugly stuff happens between the leads, but this all turns around in book 2. in fact, the development would not have been as satisfying if they hadn't been so antagonistic in the beginning... (but i won't begrudge anyone who decides book 1 is too much for them and stop)

so maybe something happens to make jake more appealing. that said, i currently don't have any plans to find out lol. the pace and mysteries are not for me and i have the same problems with jake.

It's been a whiIe since I read it, so don't can't remember all the details, but generally I like books where the main characters evolve. As I remember it, Jack's homophobic tendencies might be seen a sign of an internal conflicts. Not the first time that has been the case. The more antagonistic, the more in the closet. It is fascinating to witness such a change. I like the inner and outer conflicts and the personal development. And remember that we see Jack from Adrien's points of view and we don't know what goes on inside Jack's head and why he does or say what he do. I loved the books, but you cannot read them as stand alone. I hope that you haven't stopped reading the series. That being said, luckily we don't all like the the same books, and we differ in what we like in a book and a character...that is the wonder with books.

I am a little over half-way through book 3. I wasn't crazy about Jake before- he was a big jerk, and now I'm just pissed at him- he's an a$$- I hope he sees the error of his ways, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm not going to say what made me angy as that would be a spoiler for anyone that hasn't read it to this point.

So I've finished the series- and I must say it got better. Jake is now in good standing- I wonder if that was Lanyon's plan all along with where he took it, or if there was so many complaints about Jake being an a@@. Either way, I like how it ended up.

Jake suffered for his indiscretions immensely and paid for how wrongly he treated Adrien. In the last 2 books, his actions and his love for Adrien totally made up for his wrong doings imo

Ah, and that the books are written from Adrien's point of view has a lot to do with this. He's a faithful narrator about most things, but he's not totally reliable. Adrien has his blind spots. One of the reasons (I think) Jake becomes easier to take as the books go on is Adrien is able to report not only what Jake does and says, but why. Of course, Jake's not very forthcoming about his reasons, but Adrien is pretty quick to pass judgement, too.
