I like gay male themed stories that are well written and have something to say. The first two on my list also happen to be extraordinarily good literature, as well as being wonderful stories. I'm not really interested in fantasy or paranormal themes, or books that are basically pornography in words. I find there are few female writers that can get into the gay male mind, but there are two extraordinary female authors in my list: the amazing historical novelist Mary Renault, and Patricia Nell Warren, who I discovered a lifetime ago.

This list is a work in progress, and I would love for others to contribute their own lists, as I'm always on the lookout to discover new and exciting authors. I need to read a few more by Michael Chabon, and really need to start on David Sedaris. I look forward to your contributions.

Here is my current list of best gay MM novels I have read recently:

1. At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill
2. Call Me by Your Name by Andre Aciman
3. The Amazing Adventure of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
4. Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault (Alexander the Great trilogy)
5. The Persian Boy by Mary Renault (Alexander the Great trilogy)
6. Funeral Games by Mary Renault (Alexander the Great trilogy)
7. The Charioteer by Mary Renault
8. The Last of the Wine by Mary Renault
9. A Density of Souls by Christopher Rice
10. The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren
11. Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
12. Dream Boy by Jim Grimsley
13. A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood
14. The Best Little Boy in the World by Andrew Tobias
15. Goldenboy by Michael Nava
16. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
17. The Coming Storm - Paul Russell
18. Adam by Anthony McDonald
19. Blue Sky - Adam by Anthony McDonald
20. Sprout by Dale Peck

Although these have a "vampire theme".....Michael Schiefelbein's Novels ...they are very different to the paranormal usual. It has a theological background and the author used to be a priest...something different

I also don't mind Andrew Grey for a simple "Amish type" read

Jaxx Steele (middle of the road)

mark Zubro (Political)

In a non-fiction humorous sense (still dealing with sex, sometimes), there's always Dan Savage.
I'm actually going through my library to find a more real answer, too.

I can't agree more with 1 and 2, my favourite books!! I would also add in there Cold Hands by Joseph Pintauro and The Catch Trap by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Where can I find "Cold Hands" by Joseph Pintauro? It looks like an old book, probably out of print.

In read too M/M books, but only those written by men. Sorry, books written by women tend to be "females" versions of a heterosexual romance books. I got hooked with:

- The Lure by Felice Picano: Noel Cummings's life is about to change irrevocably. After witnessing a brutal murder, Noel is recruited by the police to pose as a lure for the killer-at-large. Undercover, Noel moves deeper and deeper into the freneticism of Manhattan's gay highlife...until he forgets he is only playing a role. (Amazon)

- Fatal Shadows by Josh Lanyon: One sunny morning Los Angeles bookseller and aspiring mystery author Adrien English opens his front door to murder. His old high school buddy (and employee) has been found stabbed to death in a back alley following a loud and very public argument with Adrien the previous evening. (Amazon)

- Death Trick by Richard Stevenson: A young man has been brutally murdered. The gay son of a wealthy family has disappeared. Now it's up to private dick Don Strachey to get to the bottom of this mess--even if he has to cruise every gay bar in the city to do it. Don Strachey isn't exactly the most sought-after private eye in Albany, New York. In fact, this gay P.I. has gotten to the point of having to write ch...more (Amazon)

I'm a huge fan of books with the dirty deed while they have a sense of plot, too.

Abigail Roux's 'Cut & Run' series is definitely one of my favourites in the bunch. She has an amazing writing style and her characters draw you in.

S.E. Jakes' 'Men of Honour' series, Catch a Ghost and Free Falling are splendid, too. She has especially improved after she has started working with Riptide.

Density of Souls by Christopher Rice has always been one of my favorite books. Never cared for his other books (though his newest piques my interest) but his debut is wonderful.

Also, I cannot recommend the author Simon Doonan enough! I just love everything he writes. He's basically the British David Sedaris. Wonderful stuff. :-)

Thanks for the recommendations, I've now read 'At Swim, Two Boys' and 'Call me by your name' and enjoyed them very much. I can recommend The Lure too, I found that a good read. My own favourite is 'No end to the way' by Neville Jackson. I managed to get hold of a paperback copy again but I've never seen it as an e-book.
