The Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library has expanded its online offerings through an eBook program, allowing cardholders to access titles more quickly.

The library has purchased 36 new titles from Over-Drive Advantage through Kentucky Libraries Unbound granting its patrons the ability to check out the eBooks digitally on any smartphone, tablet or eReader without having to worry about late fees.

"We had to pay an additional fee to use (Over-Drive Advantage)," administrative assistant Sharon Gibbs said. "We paid $1,300 for 36 books and our patrons will get to read them first."

Many of the eBooks available on Kentucky Libraries Unbound are accessible by library patrons across the commonwealth.

"We paid $84 for a John Grisham eBook, but we will have it forever," Gibbs said. "The waiting list for that eBook statewide was over 300 people. I definitely wanted to get that one."

To access eBooks, library patrons must log in with their ID and password at Kentucky Libraries Unbound.

"If you search for an eBook, and it shows up with an ‘a' and a checkmark, then that is one that we have purchased," Gibbs said. "I was able to hand select current titles. I wanted to get eBooks I knew our patrons would read."

The eBooks can be checked out from home, even when the library is closed, library circulation supervisor Laura Holt said in a previous report.

"You can access it anywhere as long as you have a library card with us that's in good standing," she said. "It's convenient for a range of eReading styles. Audio books, streaming video and music are also available."

The program offers several different lending period options, Gibbs said.

"You can check out an eBook our for seven days, 14 days or 21 days," she said. "When that time period is up, then it disappears from your eReader.

"If nobody is waiting for that eBook after your time is up, you will get an email asking if you want to renew it," she added.

Patrons can also recommend eBooks they would like to see included in the library's Over-Drive Advantage collection on the Kentucky Libraries Unbound website.
