New Zealand-based Booktrack, which enhances e-books through the addition of music and sound effects, has closed a Series B round worth $5 million from two venture capital firms, COENT Venture Partners and Sparkbox Ventures.
Booktrack technology allows users to enhance their electronic books with movie-style soundtracks and other effects, in addition to other digital text content enhancements.
According to Crunchbase data, Booktrack has raised $10 million across three rounds from six investors since inception in 2010. These include, Valar Ventures and the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund.
Booktrack, whose backers also include Peter Thiel and Weta Digital, will use the capital to fund further product development, expanding and enhancing its suite of product offerings. These include e-books called Premium Booktracks, which have soundtracks created by in-house engineers.
Users can enhance their digital reading experience by selecting a synchronised soundtrack from a database of more than 20,000 audio files. Authors can then publish the content, in the form of a book, short story, screenplay, poetry or travel blog on the Booktrack Bookshelf.
This selected audio can then play in sync with the storyline paced at each individual’s reading speed.
With the latest round of funding, the company will drive growth through marketing innovation, acquisition of premium content and allowing publishers, self-publishers and musician to create and sell Booktrack titles through its marketplace.
Booktrack currently operates a service that allows authors to add a music score to their own books, in addition to a an e-book marketplace where these these audio-enhanced books can be sold.
Commenting on the investment, CEO Paul Cameron said, “Booktrack is creating a new marketplace for authors, publishers and musicians to create soundtracks for their eBooks and reach a new audience of more than 2.5 million readers while earning new revenue streams.
Cameron added, “Booktrack will continue to help schools, parents and people looking to re-engage with reading in a modern, immersive and fun way while also increasing comprehension and retention.”
