Online media firm focusing on the startup ecosystem YourStory Media Pvt Ltd has acquired Papyrus Editor, an e-book editing and publishing platform, for an undisclosed amount.
As a part of the deal, Gaurav Tiwari, founder of Papyrus, will join YourStory as tech lead, and will be working on generating technology products, including one for user-generated content, according to an announcement published by YourStory.
Papyrus, which was founded in 2012 by Tiwari, allows users to create ebooks in an easy blog-post-like format. It also has a cover editor and supports PDF, EPUB and Kindle formats for the created ebooks. The company was backed by startup accelerator The Morpheus.
“We want everyone to be able to tell their stories. The acquisition of Papyrus is a step towards achieving this objective. I met Gaurav Tiwari last year and immediately realised there was an opportunity for synergy,” said Shradha Sharma, founder of YourStory.
YourStory was established in 2008 as an online media platform to cover the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country. It had raised under $5 million from Ratan Tata, Kalaari Capital, former Infosys board member T V Mohandas Pai and Qualcomm Ventures in August this year.
Raghav Bahl, who runs a digital content platform called The Quint, had recently invested $3.25 million (Rs 22 crore) in Bangalore- and California-based data-driven publishing startup Quintype Inc. Quintype is a SaaS service platform to help run digital media businesses, including content creation and distribution, audience development and monetisation.
YourStory's offerings compete with some products of The VCCircle Network. The parent of VCCircle Network—whose business lines include subscription data products, events, training programmes and a subscription-led news website and app focused on the startup ecosystem as well as business at large in India—was acquired by News Corp in March.
