NK News on Monday published a free eBook containing 20 articles and essays about contemporary life along North Korea’s northern border.

The eBook, which contains news stories and long-form dispatches from the Chinese, Russian and North Korean sides of the border, provides new insights into the DPRK’s evolving relations with the people and policy-makers among its northern neighbors.

Reporters working undercover conducted two separate trips for the assignment, with one producing extended coverage from the Hunchun, Yanji and Vladivostok areas, and the other covering Dandong and the regions immediately north.

One author also entered North Korea with a Chinese tour group to file two reports on the notable characteristics of Chinese travel interest in the North.

And expert contributors like Dr. Andrei Lankov and NK News defector author Je-Son Lee also contributed, filing columns and short-form reports about the historical and emerging border situation.

“While it is undeniable that the DPRK is a more reclusive nation than most, its borders are far from impermeable,” said Jennifer Dodgson, NK News‘ editor of the book.

“Wanting to bring this fascinating and largely unknown corner of the world to a wider audience, in
2015 NK News launched a Kickstarter campaign to send undercover reporters to the
region.

“The response was better than we could have hoped for, and we exceeded our funding goals,” she continued.

The “North Korea Borderlands Reporting Project” raised $26,631.00 from NK News readers and friends in a Kickstarter campaign that ended in May 2015. The campaign exceed the original funding goal of $16,000, with the additional $10,000 used to support ongoing ‘Ask a North Korean’ columns for a year.
