DatalogicsChicago, IL-based Datalogics made several announcements today at BookExpo America and the International Digital Publishing Forum in New York, including a new cloud storage service offering for Adobe Content Server (ACS). The Datalogics ACS Cloud Service enables ACS customers to provide eBook cloud storage capabilities to their readers, enabling download and synchronization of content across all their devices.

Features of the Datalogics ACS Cloud Service include:

  • eBook download onto multiple devices – Users can access their books on all of their devices (phones, tablets, computers).

  • Synchronized reading position – Users can start reading on their phone, and then continue on their tablet at the last page read.

  • Synchronized bookmarks and highlights – These can be created on any device, and will be synchronized in the cloud and available to all devices.

  • Cloud backup – If devices are lost or become inoperable, content and settings can easily be re-downloaded onto replacement devices.

The Datalogics Cloud Service is comprised of three components:

  • An ACS integration component that connects an Adobe Content Server installation to the cloud service;

  • cloud-enabled clients that can connect to the cloud service; and

  • the cloud service itself.

The Adobe Content Server integration component is provided as an ACS plugin. Its primary function is to enable purchased and lent content to be stored within the cloud storage service for client retrieval. When a book is fulfilled, the ACS integration component stores the book and information about that book in the cloud service, and the client retrieves the book there.

Cloud-enabled clients are eReader devices and applications that utilize the cloud service client-side APIs to access the cloud storage service. Clients can pull content and information down from the cloud service, as well as push content and information up to the cloud service, as necessary. Any eReader client can be enhanced to connect to the Datalogics cloud storage service. The APIs are open access and freely available for use by anyone. Support for the freely available Adobe Digital Editions is planned, and

DL Reader, our brandable reference app for iOS, Android and Windows, will be updated to connect to the cloud service. DL Reader is available as a free download from the App Store (iOS), Google Play (Android), and the Datalogics website (Windows desktop). Branded readers built upon DL Reader will also be compatible with the cloud service.

The cloud service runs on scalable, highly available servers and is managed by a dedicated Datalogics cloud operations team.

Other Announcements

The Datalogics ACS Cloud Service is one of several ongoing Datalogics initiatives in the eBook market.  Datalogics continues to work on the Readium SDK, an open-source industry initiative to develop an EPUB3 rendering engine optimized for native apps on tablet and other devices.
