Its a trilogy or more.

The first one deals with a girl being taken to the city/capitol/some kind of academy.

She (and others like her, although I seem to think it was a female only talent) is able to control what they call ghosts.

Later in the book or series, she manages to gain control of what they call the "great ghosts" or "great black ghosts" that essentially are the same "spirits" but much larger and more powerful and "live" out in space, and are much more powerful than the typical ones.

One cover depicted one of these vaguely catlike characters standing on a sort of cruciform platform that is flying through the air.

It was in my school library, so odds are it was a relatively well known author (at least at the time).

I couldn't say what method of input and output my high school library did with books, but I know I read it right around the time I read L.E.Modesitt's Hammer of Darkness.

Later in the series she and others are using these powers to fight off some kind of invaders.

Jim Butcher readers might note there are some conceptual similarities between these books and his Codex Alera books (good series btw), but the ones I am seeking are much older.

You're looking for a Glen Cook series!!

The series is collected in a compilation called Darkwar, and the first (uncollected) book is called Doomstalker. It features feline creatures who have psychic/magical powers. Here's the synopsis for the first book, Doomstalker:

"It was the dormant, loathsome instinct possessed by every beast of Ponath. An innocent pup of the Degnan Packstead, Marika thought it was just a tale to frighten the young. Then the Grauken-possessed, cannibalistic nomads swept down from the far north -- and the winter of death began.

Marika's pack now has to fight for its life -- even if it means calling upon the treacherous witchlike Silth who can slay by mind alone. But young Marika has powers, too... enormous, untamed mental energies. Can Marika be a weapon against their foes? Or will she become something far greater than the Silth, something fearfully whispered of only in legends... Doomstalker"

"Upon my word, there is nothing in the world so easy to explain as failure – it is, after all, what every body does all the time."
