Bear with me because the details are a bit sketchy in my head:
The couple are either engaged or newlyweds, he's a journalist and uncovers something which he threatens to expose. They're car jacked and he's shot in front of her. The end of the book reveals that this was a set up and he is actually alive. It ends with a huge cliffhanger that suggests he's going to go back to her and expose whatever it was he'd uncovered (I think there are still documents in her house.) But meanwhile she's grieved hard and fallen for someone else (possibly his friend?)
I know this isn't brilliant as far as details go but I'm really hoping someone can help as I need to read the next book lol.
