I read this thriller novel in 2005. Its probably old. Written around 1980's or 1990's. Perhaps even before.
Its begins with these two British spies/agents who go to retrieve information from a spy but are ambushed by the Gestapo (in Vienna?). Almost parallel to the real life Venlo Incident where British spies were captured in a Gestapo trap by the SS/SD. They are sent to a Nazi prison where the protagonist's friend is labeled a homosexual and dies.

There's also the matter of some Nazi gold hidden and many characters try to retrieve it. There's a character called Hugo/Heinrich. I think he's responsible for the theft of the gold and he and his compatriots hide it in a mine or a mountain somewhere. He's a member of the Gestapo/SS/SD and was responsible for the kidnapping of the protagonist and his friend in the beginning of the book. Towards the end of the war, the protagonist is released from prison/concentration camp and hunts Nazis. He kills Hugo/Heinrich at the end of the book near a mountain if memory serves. The book also shows how Nazi Germany started a war with Poland under false circumstances i.e. the Glewize incident- they claimed Polish soldiers had carried out an attack on a german outpost/radio station.
The book had a yellow cover. And it had SS written on it. Looked very old. I could have sworn it was by Frederick Forsyth but I've gone through all his novels and so far haven't come up with the right one. Perhaps the author had a similar name.
I'm offering a reward of 2000wrz$ to whoever can give me the name and author of the book.

What about SS-GB by Len Deighton?

Will re-read the first few pages of this old page and see if the plot matches.

Given your strong memory of Frederick Forsyth's name on the cover, I went back over his books again, and found that he also published two collections of short stories. However, none of these seem to match the plot. Can you definitely recall that this mystery book was a full novel size? Is there any chance it could have been a short story.

I also want to read the book described above, so I did some research with this latest information/suggestion.

"Nazi Gold" is another title for "The Mittenwald Syndicate".

This review (in German) suggests that it might really be the right book.

German review translated . . .

"A mixture of ZDF documentary and TV-Nazi Gold thriller. Based on a historical document tinkering started a robber pistol between 1936 and 1946. He juggles with German names, locations and streets buzzes the one of the head. In addition, there processes and procedures of that period. Whether that makes sense every time is sometimes debatable. He takes three main characters especially for breast Firstly the Nazi villain who leaves a vast treasure of money, gold and diamonds in the last days of WWll somewhere disappear in southern Germany. Second is an English agent who has a personal reckoning with this same Nazi, because this put the Englishman and his colleagues in a concentration camp and the colleague eventually died. And then there's the American officer, where the treasure fall into the hands. To what extent there are facts that actually plays are listed as not matter, because that would not make the book more exciting. With two exceptions, the figures are actually stereotypes and neither Quest nor the end entail surprises. Can I have read, but is quickly forgotten ..."

Can't find an ebook version of this title, though . . .
