I read this many years ago. I remember only a few details and it's very sketchy

this guy was close to a building that exploded, rendering him and the ground that he was standing on invisible. the military(? some government department) wanted to get them to work for them, they find out as this guy's girlfriend painted a picture of an invisible guy laying in bed(? not sure if it's a painting or book cover). he also had an confrontation with a government guy and was shot. He buys a house and then visit at night to check up on the contracter that's renovating the place for him.

Unfortunately that's what I remember. read the book in the early 90's

vaguely sounds like my recollection of Memoirs of an Invisible Man, by H. F. Saint. don't hold me to that, though.
