The story is based in contemporary times, except that the fae had come out years before (years, decades, centuries, not sure).
There are a number of clans of fae, and humans mostly work for them for protection. Basically each clan acts as a corporation and protects the humans that work for them.
The protagonist is the daughter of a clan leader who had been framed and killed for betraying the rest of the fae. Her clan's lands were marked restricted and no one was allowed to visit.
She grew up among the humans, with her family dead, after she ran away from her foster family that (naturally) treated her as the daughter of a criminal.
As an adult, she became an accomplished thief. That's where the story starts.
She ends up stealing a valuable jewel from the son of another clan leader when he's in town for something.
She ends up going back to the fae clans to participate in some kind of competition, where the winner gets to ask a boon. She wins and requests her lands back.
She also brought her gang with her when she rejoined.
It's of note that these fae are each born with a magical ability (teleportation, flight, create lots of fire, make plants grow) different for each fae. Her ability is to steal some or all of the magical ability from others.
