I read a book in the 90's where a (perhaps) slightly mad billionaire builds an optical, and therefore quantum computer. I think there was a journalist and maybe his daughter on the island where it was built. Usual trope the computer goes nuts as it becomes self-aware, but that's about all I can remember.

I really did like it though.
