Hey all, need to pick people's brains, if you can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.
There are two books I'm looking for. I'll describe them as best I can remember.
The first book is set in the future, though probably only about 50 years as it seemed not that futuristic. The different races were segregated - Asians with Asians, Caucasians with Caucasians, etc. This story is about a young girl who lives in a Caucasian society, walled in and they worship the Goddess, or Mother, I can't remember, and she and another boy run away together. They come across another segregated community but they're all black women and men. They have an identical Goddess/Mother statue to the one the Caucasian community have, except it's a black woman instead of white. Every person has a number, like in Logan's run. Her name is something like Dinah6 or Dorothy6 or something like that. The cover has a white statue with it's arms raised to the sky.
The second book has a bird cage on the front of it, with feathers on the bottom of the cage and the door standing ajar. It's about a mother and her two sons that spend the night in their underground bunker for a "camp out" and they wake the next morning to find that the street is totally empty of people, then they realise it's not the street, it's the entire city. All they find of people are personal belongings - watches, pacemakers, dentures, etc (a bit like the Langoliers but on the ground) They meet others and learn that all the survivors had been underground when the people above-ground disappeared.
Both very interesting stories, hoping to find them again. If anyone knows them or has read them, would love to hear from you. Thank you.
