I'm trying to find a book/series I read a few years ago that I want to reread. I might be getting some details wrong but this is what I can remember:
The series starts off with the main character and his friend, a prince. They witness a witch getting killed. The MC feels a connection of some sort with her just as she dies. Afterwards, he notices his friend's personality changing for the worse.
Fast forward and the prince is now King and either banishes the MC or sends him on a trip out of the kingdom and doesn't expect him to come back alive. He goes with a mercenary to a neighborhood kingdom where he meets and falls in love with a princess. Unfortunately, he gets killed by the mercenary, but then finds out that the witch gifted him with the ability to trade places with his killer, i.e you tried to kill me? My soul and yours will now switch places so you die now in my body but I'll continue living on in yours.
The rest of the series (I think there's only 3 books total from what I can remember) follows him as he makes his way around the continent in different bodies as he tries to get back to his kingdom somehow to prevent the princess from having to marry the king that everyone hates.
