You know when you read a book a long time ago and never got to finish the series but can't remember it's name? I've tried whatsthatbook.com but got no replies. Driving me crazy so here is everything I can remember in the hope that someone here knows what it's called:

- It's science fiction and part of a series
- Features a planet/star (definitely something spherical) on the front cover with a background of space
- Involves space travel on ships
- Involves genetic engineering and brain washing of warriors who are raised from birth to be the perfect fighters. I'm not sure but I think the protagonist infiltrates and pretends to be one of them or one of them is not working according to the genetic modification program and has a 'mind of his own'.
- Citizens also choose to modify themselves so that, for example, some have wings. There are some religious overtones to some groups of people who modify themselves.
- The protagonist has memory loss or something wrong with him.
- The thing I'm most sure about is that there is this artificial computer life form searching the universe for the creator.
- I think this book was released sometime between 1990-2009

Hope you can help.

Could be one of Charles Sheffield's books such as Sight of Proteus or one of the follow ups

It could be the Cyber Chronicles by TC Southwell. The points you have plotted sound alot like book 6 in the series. http://www.tcsouthwellbooks.com/warrior_breed.htm
