Sigh.. For the life of me i can not remember the name of this book. I will give you guys as much of the plot as i can.

Fiction/military/thriller book.

Its a military/thriller book about 2 military pilots flying a (f-14 tomcat if i recall right) who are selected for special training.
They are sent out into the ??Desert i think?? where they have to fight other American forces.. All weapons are fake but look and act real.
The "Fake" weapons systems are called...??? Zoot ?? they project like a holografic missile or bullet (depending on the weapon) it looks real and sounds real but isn't.
During training they must acheve certain goals.. like shooting down planes, attacking certain places. If they do this successfully they are awarded points and the more points any of the groups get the more supplies that are airdropped to them.

After or during this training they are made aware they have been selected to attack a .."Vietnam?????North korean???" base in real life. The reason for the training is the target is surrounded with SAM's (surface to air missiles) so the people in ????Charge?? of this special training area setup a exact reproduction of the attack that needs to be done. But using the ???Zoot?? systems.

Last but not least they had to setup a portable catapult launcher (like whats installed on a aircraft carrier) both in the training area and where they were launching the real attack. (if i recall right the one for the real attack was located inside a cave)


I read this book years ago and can't remember the name of it.. Any help would be appreciated..
