Please help me remember the title, I read this almost 20 years a go !!

So what I remember, first scene is a man who shoots himself because he is indebted, he leaves a young widow (I think she is british) and his teenager daughter behind.
The hero is half native american I think, he saves the widow and marries her , the daughter gets infatuated with an older man who works in a circus.

I think the timeline is american westward expansion/ Frontier , the cover was silver or had the word silver ??? not sure .
